Put ‛CF‛ Over The Top
Consolidated Fund of Washington County workers and
contributors deserve much credit for seeing the 1962 drive
through to completion.
How do you keep boy and girl scouting going? Help a
public library? Or, help the blind by providing Braile
reading material and the many other fine projects that make
Washington county a worthwhile place in which to live?
We all feel better after giving one amount instead of
giving to fourteen different agencies one at a time. CF com-
bines only those agencies really needed for Washington
county in/an efficient way.
Let's help Consolidated Fund of Washington County
‘over the top.’
The First Christmas Tree Lights
Know who made the first Christmas tree lights?
Well, considering the name of this column, the answer
shouldn’t be too much of a surprise a telephone man.
Here’s how it happened:*
Back in the early 1900’s, Ralph E. Morris' little boy
crawled under the Christmas tree, upset one of the wax
candles and singed his hair. Morris promptly announced
there would never be anoher flame near a Christmas tree
in his house. Then, he got to thinking and remembered the
switchboard down at the telephone office and how, at cer-
tain times of the day, it often reminded him of a Christmas
tree.
So what did he do but buy several dozen switchboad
lamps which he then soldered to wires to make them a
string of lights. He used colored paper to cover the lamps,
and so it was the first electric lights on a Christmas tree!
Gift Shopper's Time Saver
Once more it is time to be thinking of our loved ones
* and friends and gifts for them at Christmas.
We've made shopping easy this year by extending our
Gift Service to include a full line of residence telephone
service which can tie given to some one with an advance
gift card and gift wrapped bantam size telephone. The
charges are Just added to your regular telephone bill.
Save time and worry by calling the business office, GR
6-3601, and ordering telephone gifts for the family. You can
give a color set, a Princess telephone or whatever you
choose, to a relative or friend in another Bell exchange,
too
Happy shopping.
