Dear Editor:
Don’t try it on your girlfriend. It
might get you a slap in the chops.
Experts estimate that the amount
of coal in sight in the United Staets
alone should be enough to supply the
world for fifteen hundred to two
thousand years.
The United States, with its popu- '
lation of two hundred million, has a :
purchasing power greater than that:
of five hundred million Europeans or :
a billion Asiatics.
I have just finished reading your
article in the Llano News reporting
the eagle count on Lake Buchanan.
The effort put forth by the guides on
the lake is a great credit to their
profession, however, your report and
mention of the boats volunteered is
not quite complete or correct.
Ed Kurtz, striper guide and captain
of the Bluebonnet, (a 23-foot searay)
and owner of the Lake Buchanan
Guide Service, carried six people in
his boat all the way up the Colorado
to Lemon’s Fishing Camp, and
among those aboard was Keith
Ackerly, member of the Birding
Society and the Lake Buchanan
Chamber of Commerce. He com-

Apples and pears should be picked

done, the bruised spots will dry up,
but if they are picked when the moon
is new, the spots will rot.
Friday, which the Romans desig-
nated as Venus' day, is the best day
for a proposal of marriage.
Kerosene, the calendar says, will
soften boots or shoes that have been
hardened by water, and make them
look like new. Well, almost.
Good dear ice, two inches thick,
will bear men walking on it. Four
inches will bear horses and riders,
while six inches will bear teams and
wagons with moderate loads.
The birthstone for the month of
January is the garnet, but if you can
postpone your birthday until April,
the birthstone for that month is the
diamond.
Hair which is the lightest in color
is also the lightest in weight. Blonde
hair is the most luxuriant. The
average number of blonde hairs on a
person’s head is 140,000. Brown
hairs average 110,000 per head and
black only 103,000.
We’ve always heard that the
Greeks had a word for it. Well, the
mended Ed for arriving at each point
(as was planned prior to the tour)
right on time and for advising him of
locations on the lake by pointing
them out on his map as They moved
up the lake and river. Credit should
be given where credit is due. Twenty
four of the eagles were spotted from
the Bluebonnet by the group with
Ed, which included Charles Tischler
(the eagle expert).
Being a striped bass guide, Ed
invests a lot of his experience on
Lake Buchanan at times like this and
it seems to me he could at least be
mentioned. Ed Kurtz is not one of
the Bass Busters, he is a striper
guide and runs a successful guide
service and you be sure he did a
terrific job because that is the kind of
guide he is.
I certainly hope the oversight in
your article can be corrected in some
way. He gladly volunteered his boat,
not to mention time and expense.
Thank you,
Mrs. Ed (Betty) Kurtz
What opponents failed to do in a
public meeting — trying to get rid of
the present Llano coaching staff —
they are now trying to do privately
with an intensive telephone cam-
paign and private meetings, accord-
ing to reports circulating town.
Petitions are also being circulated in
an effort to bring pressure on the
school board and administration to i
change their minds.

During the four major wars of this century:
World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam
Wars, a total of 836,282 Americans lost their
lives.
In 1986, the most recent yeer for which there
are accurate figures, 991,332 Americans died
of heart attacks, strokes and other blood
vessel diseases.
Even though cardivascular disease mortality
has dropped 20 percent In the last decade, it
still kills nearly one million Americans each
year.
Heart attacks alone caused the deaths of
over 640,000 people. By comparison, 407,316
Americans died in World War II, the nation’s
costliest war.

Still the sore spot is football. Llano
has traditionally prided itself with
good football teams. There were
times that if Llano were beaten by a
certain team, the coaches automa-
tically started looking for another
job. A losing season is bad enough,
but going 10 games without a victory
is unthinkable to some.
Not too many years ago, San Saba
went through the same problem.
They had three new coaches in four
years and during that time period,
the once “Golden Armadillos” play-
ed 30 games and lost 29. It was
tragic. A coach never had the time
or support to get his program
started, let alone be able to follow
through. San Sabans learned the
hard way. Hopefully, Llanoans will
not follow the same path.
One school board member feels that

The December school board meet-
ing that was held at Llano High
School auditorium saw many people
speak out on behalf of the coaching
staff despite a football season that
saw Llano fail to win a game. The
Llano boys’ basketball program has
also been chalking up more losses
than wins. As of this writing, the
varsity boys have not won a district
basketball game.
Hopefully the school board will
stick by its decision and give the
coaching staff another year to prove
its worth. The varsity girls’ coach,
Charlotte Dehnel, and junior varsity
girls’ coach Becky Dale have cer-
tainly proved their worth. The
varsity girls have lost only two
games and the junior varsity was
undefeated as of Monday.

four years when he first starts. That
way the freshmen would be able to
advance all the way to the varsity
under one system. If, by the fourth
year, the coach was not able to
produce a winning team, then try
another coach.
If parents and those with a “win
only” attitude could get the rules
changed so coaches could recruit
football players at the high school
level like they do in colleges, then
maybe changing coaches for having
a losing season might be appropo.
High school coaches don’t have that
option. They have to take what
comes through the door, regardless
of their size or ability of the students.
Class 4-A and 5-A coaches have a
lot more to choose from and a much
better quality when it comes to
natural ability to play the game. You
also hav to take into account the
numerous injuries that can decimate
a team.
Llano has a good coaching staff and
they are also better than average
classroom teachers. They deserve
the support of the administration,
school board, parents and students
— win or lose. A good public vote of
confidence has been given. Hopeful-
ly, it will not be forgotten.
Many people go through life
wondering what the fine print on the
backs of calendar pages is all about
without ever bothering to read it and
find out. There are some gems of
wisdom to be gleaned from the backs
of the pages of the calendars given
away annually by banks, insurance
companies and many business firms,
stuff you could live and be happy
without knowing, but why die
ignorant when education is so close
at hand?
For instance, each of the seven days
of the week has been designated as
the sabbath by various nationalities
and religions. Monday is the Greek
sabbath, Tuesday the Persian, Wed-
nesday the Assyrian, Thursday the
Egyptian, Friday the Turkish, Satur-
day the Jewish, and Sunday the
Christian. If you happen to be tired.

think people appreciate the fact that more
than 60 percent of the deaths in this country
are still dua to heart disease.
Dr. Morgan is president of the American
Heart Association, which released the latest
statistics at the start of Its annual science
writers forum.
Exports believe that a sizeable share of
deaths from heart attacks and strokes can be
prevented if Americans stop smoking, get
their blood pressure down and watch their
diets to reduce cholesterol levels.
The second loading cause of deaths in 1966
was cancer, which took 467,670 lives.
It should awaken some of us up ... and make
us heed what the exports say.
The response of the fans has been
quite evident, as expected. Large
crowds are showing up for the girls’
eames. but thev have been very slim
for the boys. In fact, at one of the
most recent girls’ games, the
admission fees topped the $400 mark
and that has been a rare event for
Llano basketball.

We wholeheartedly agree with
Rev. Henderson’s letter on the
alcohol problem among our young
people.
Students will readily tell you that
drinking alcohol has been a major
problem in the Llano area for years.
Way too many people are sticking
their heads in the sand scared to face
reality hoping the problem will go
awgy. In the meantime, our young
people’s lives are being damaged,
ruined, and destroyed by alcohol.
It seems the prevailing attitude is
drugs are bad and wrong, but
drinking alcohol is okay and accept-
able. How sad! And even more
disturbing is when students tell you
that some parents are the very ones
providing the alcohol for their
children’s beer parties.
Until attitudes are changed and
parents, in particular, take a more
active stand against all drugs (
including alconolt) then alcohol will
continue to play a major role in
hurting our youth.
As adults, let us give our young
people the love, help and support
they want and need. They need
adults to lead the way in this battle.

Dear Editor:
With much interest and approval,
I read the letter from the Rev. Robert
