be an unsusually large number of deaths to cancer.
It is fitting that the Relay for Lite is scheduled for May 14-15 at Llano
High School - and the Luminaria Service, beginning at dark, will be a
wonderful way to remember that special person who lost the fight or the
one who continues the battle
Proceeds from the event help support the goals of the Highland Lakes/

When Alan Crawford decided to
fly his 1947 Piper PAl 1 Sea Plane
halfway across the country, he may,
or may not have know what he was
getting himself into.
It took him 10 1/2 hours-to fly
the 984 nautical miles to Lakeland,
Florida for Sun-N-Fun Fly in and
Air Show - the second largest air
show in the country.
Oh, Crawford knows about flying
long distance - he's a pilot with
Southwest Airlines He's been fly-
ing for 35 years.
However, instead of cruising at
30,000 feet at 700 miles per hour,
he basically dragged the trees aver-
aging about 90 miles per hour -
that because of a good tail wind.
His Piper has.no electronics, no
automatic pilot and he had no co-
pilot.
The only instrument he did carry
was a hand-held global positioning
system (GPS) that allows you to
track where you are at any given
time. Other than that, it was maps,
a compass and landmarks. Another
challenge he faced was finding ‘bod-

+ Chrystal River and finally to Lake- I

"Airports in Louisiana and Florida -
have sea bases so it's easy to find
fuel," Crawford said. A sea base is
simply a water runway at airports.
Along with 50 other sea planes,
Crawford competed in three differ *
ent contests including Aerial Bomb
Drops (where they dropped, by
hand, grapefruit into an inter tube
on the ground). Spot Landing and
Take-Off.
Crawford came home with the
first place trophy for spot landing
and for the speediest take off. Then,
when all of the winners in each cat-
egory competed, Crawford won
