and Fredericksburg, retaining much of
the culture of the early German settle-
ments in Texas. Or for a special treat
they can pop into the drug store at

for a treat at an old-fashioned soda

Because Garner is not located on
any of the popular routes taken by
winter Texans to the southern part of
the state, many of them are not aware
of the charm of this unique state park.
That is beginning to change as more
and more of them are beginning to find
their way to this unspoiled area of
spectacular scenery.
The park was originally a construc-
tion project of the CCC’s (Civilian
Conservation Corps), in the 1930’s,
using only native materials found in
the area. The cypress beams, the mas-
sivehand-wroughthinges on the doors,
and the rock keystone arches of the
concession building are a testament to
their labors in those Depression years.

own children to introduce them to the
thrills of the hills. Over the years, as
many campers stepped up to various
types of trailers, the park began to take
steps to accommodate them. Water
and electricity were installed at doz-
ens of campsites, new campgrounds
within the park were established, and
new land was acquired to almost double
its size to the present 1420 acres.
Many of those early visitors to the
park are now among that great horde
of retirees who spend all or much of
their time traveling in RV’s. Instead of
spending the winters in the Rio Grande
Valley or along the coast as many out-
of-staters do, these Texans “head for
the hills” in the fall, winter, and early
spring to enjoy a modified version of
their earlier visits to Garner Park.
There are numerous hiking trails
riot so harsh as those they previously
enjoyed. The river, free from the ac-
tivity of the summer, can be fished.
Almost 150 species of birds have been
identified in the park, about 65 of
these in the winter. An abundance of
four-legged creatures may be observed
around the campsites, including white-
tailed deer, axis deer, turkey, armadil-
los, porcupines, two types of squirrels,
raccoons, and an occasional skunk.
Visitors also enjoy the many ex-
cursions that can easily be completed
in a day from Garner State Park. To the
south is picturesque Uvalde, boasting
an opera house and the home of John
Nance Garner, vice president under
Franklin D. Roosevelt and for whom
the park was named.
To the west is Alamo Village at
Brackettville, where John Wayne’s
epic, “The Alamo,” was filmed, as
were scenes from the recent TV

Just a day’s drive from Mercedes
up Highway 83 lies one of Texas’ best
0 kept secrets.
For more than fifty summers, Tex-
] ans have flocked by the thousands to
8 Garner State Park west of San Antonio
I to getaway from the rush of the worka-
§ day world.
Camping along the cypress-lined
banks of the Frio River, mostly in
J tents, they swam and frolicked in its
I aptly named waters (Frio translates
from Spanish as cold), hiked up “Old
" Baldy” or others of the surrounding
I hills, bicycled, played volleyball or
I miniature golf, pitched washers, or
J just relaxed in the shade of the numer-
j ous pecan and liveoak trees.
Each evening at sundown, hun-
dreds of campers, freshly showered
and spruced up, converged on the pa-
vilion affectionately known as “The
Slab”, for an evening of dancing to
such tunes as “Cotton-Eyed Joe” blar-
ing from the juke box.
Many a summer romance blos-
somed there. Although some of these
lasted awhile, and a few even culmi-
nated in marriage, most quickly faded
when the sweethearts returned to the
real world.
As children of these Garner Park
families grew up, they brought their
