Competition. All organizations
face some sort of competition. The
Postal Service is no different. It faces
competition across its entire product
line.
Alternative delivery services, fax
machines, and various electronic mes-
saging systems provide an ever-in-
creasing wave of competition. The
Postal Service is responding by look-
ing at innovative new programs and
products to provide the type of service ;
customers expect and deserve.
The Postal Service of the ’90s has
taken bold new steps in measuring its
service performance by contracting j
with highly regarded, independent ac-

levels of customer satisfaction and

(Editor’s Response: Obviously,
we disagree, Miss Cortez, with your
assertion that we fail to recognize aca-
demic achievers. Boy, do we ever beg
to differ.
In the first place, the emphasis on
extracurricular activities in this com-
munity and in this newspaper is nei-
ther inappropriate, nor overblown.
Such things as band and sports do
some things better than book-learning
can, like instilling discipline, teaching
perseverance, inspiring teamwork and
providing motivation.
But when you question the
Enterprise’s coverage of academics,
we have to wonder whether you read
the paper on a consistent basis. During
the school year, EVERY SCHOOL
YEAR, this is what you find on the
pages of this paper:
— Complete lists of honor roll
students from EVERY GRADE in
Mercedes public schools EACH SIX
WEEKS.
— Photographs of every group of
"students of themonth” from EVERY
; GRADE through junior high. Seven
grades, averaging 20 students per
grade, means pictures of 140 students
EACH MONTH being recognized for
grades and effort.
—As recently as June, we profiled
an MHS student—Salutatorian Yectli
Huerta — who had turned adversity
into tremendous academic success.
— After graduation, we ran A
COMPLETE LIST of winners of
MHS academic scholarships.
— Before graduation, we ran A
COMPLETE LIST of academic (and
elective) departmental award winners
from MHS, and WE ALWAYS RUN
at least one picture of the MHS top ten
seniors.
— We have, YEAR AFTER
YEAR, run photographs of groups
such as UIL academic teams, which
have taken awards in contests.
— We are at present GIVING
AWAY space to Graham Elementary
to run their “bonus vocabulary words”
each week, and we very often feature
students’ essays on topics on interest.
— You mention leadership: we
run photos of the officer slates of more
student groups that we can count, and
every student who gets his picture in
this paper for whatever reason serves
as a role model to his peers and those
younger than he.
—On the page after the story about
the girl athletes you mention was a
picture of the entire sixth grade band,
ALL 63 MEMBERS, who were be-
ing recognized for having all passed
the first six weeks.
— In the story that you say slights
academics, we pointed out in print that
the athletes do all these extracurricu-
lar things (and do them very well)
WHILE MAINTAINING GOOD
GRADES.
— Not three months ago, we ran
YOUR PICTURE on the front page
to recognize you for your extracur-
ricular academic success.
In fact, Miss Cortez, one complaint
more common than yours is that dur-
ing the school year, this publication
sometimes seems like a school district
newsletter. And that’s just fine with
us, because there is so much good
going on in Mercedes public schools
that all we can hope to do is scrape the
surface.
If you still don't get it, we invite you
to write a guest column about some of
the young Mercedes people you know
who are accomplishing great things —
doing whatever it is they enjoy doing or
do best. We would welcome your addi-
tions to these pages.)
We remain a family business, based in your
hometown, ready to assist you in your time of need.
