We had no idea about B.A. and we

Hello, Mercedes,
— For Bobby... —
Bobby Adame was good man. He
was my friend.
As far back as the hazy days of
grade school went he and I. We put our
first hogs in the stockshow at the same
time. He had an ugly Berkshire. Looked
like it had run into a wall.
On that night, we bedded down
with the hogs and had swigs of illegal
tequila. From the Blue Bar, in a
Listerine bottle. One swig each. The
world leaned and our eyes burned.
The nineteen sixtyfour Tiger foot-
ball team started Adame and Schwarz
at guards and Lentz at center. Argue
the merits of football all you care to.
The boys who play on the same team,
beside each other for years, learn each
other. Learn the things about each other
that don’t go away.
you how bad it hurts. I wish I could
write down how finely and far we go
back. How this hurting sits so hard in
me. But, I can’t.
I can tell you I called Brian and
told him. I talked with Polo and we
both tried damn hard not to cry. He
will carry you for us; he’s got the
shoulders for it.
I’ve always thought of you, man,
and I can never forget.
None of us can because we grew up
together.
I’ll just have to think of this sting-
ing in the eyes as coming from that
first taste of tequila... , %
