Voters pass $10 million bond issue
Mercedes public school voters on
Saturday approved a $10 million
school bond election that will fund
the ongoing school construction and
remodeling program.
Final tally was 259 in favor of the
bond issue and 107 opposed. Of the
93 early votes cast, 70 were in favor
of the proposition.

Sanctuary of Mercedes First
Presbyterian Church, located at 601
S. Texas.
All are invited, and there is no
admission charge.
Santa Claus is coming to town -
not just on Christmas Eve, but also
on December 17.
He’ll stop by that night - a
Monday - starting at 6:30 p.m., at the
city parking lot located at Texas
Avenue and Fourth Street. Everyone’s
invited to join in the holiday
festivities.
Youngsters on hand will receive
bags of goodies, and everyone can
enjoy the holiday music that will be
provided by singing groups and the
MHS Band. Anyone involved with a
group interested in caroling is invited
to contact organizers.
“We’re extending an invitation to
all to join us in this holiday jubilee,”
says organizer Alonzo Calvillo. “We’d
like to have as many groups as
possible take part in our song fest.”

Knights host their annual
Christmas Kiddie Show
Mercedes children can look
forward to the upcoming Christmas
Kiddie Show, conducted each year by
the Mercedes Knights of Columbus.
This year’s event will run from 9
a.m. to noon on Sunday, December
23, at the Knights of Columbus Hall
on North Ohio.
Attractions will range from the
magic of Ron Pena to movies and door
prizes, and the distribution of treats
by the Jolly Old Elf himself.
There is no charge, and the event
is open to all children from infants to
age 12.

Schools, and the Early Childhood
Development Center; Valley Oak Tree
and Lullaby’s Day Care, the MHS
Band, Faith Church of Weslaco,

the Mercedes All-Star Cheerleaders.
Sponsors of the event are the
Mercedes Christmas Parade
Committee, the Sons of the American
Legion and the Mercedes Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Officials of the group say that
they intend to reinstitute the parade
next year.

SEEKING TOYS FOR CHILDREN - Travis Elementary
School PTO officers are urging the public to “adopt
an angel” from their angel tree to help bring smiles
to less fortunate children this Christmas season.
The group has begun a “Christmas Angels/
Angelitos Navidenos” project, in which
participants “adopt” a student and provide them
with a Christmas gift. Inviting you to participate
are, from left, PTO President William Aguillon,
Treasurer Jeffra Gutierrez, School Principal Pearl
Guerrero and Vice-President Richard Garcia. Not
shown is Secretary Melissa Colon. The officers will
conduct a PTO meeting this Thursday, December
13, at 6:30 p.m. at the school, to issue a formal
invitation to other PTO members to adopt an
angel. Gifts should be brought in by December
19, as distribution will be Friday, December 21.

TOY DRIVE UNDERWAY - Mercedes Police
Department and the Fire Department personnel
are conducting a Christmas Toy Drive and they
invite everyone to join them in making the holiday
brighter for area children. Among those working
to bring a smile to a child’s face are, from left,
Fire Marshall Rolando Maldonado, Detective Olga
Maldonado, Officer Sophie Garza, Police Chief
Omar Lucio, Detective Jorge Salazar and Captain
Shawn McDuffie. The group is also accepting
donations of food and cash. Those wanting to
share their own blessings are asked to drop off
donations at the Mercedes Police Department,
or they can contact Detective Maldonado or
Officer Garza at 565-3102. Gift donations can also
be given to any police or fire department officer
you can flag down while on patrol. Distribution
