THMELY APPEAL
Dear Mercedes,
Letters from F.S. Lentz, Jr. I
Dear Mercedes,
- Ice in San Antonio -
The weather moved in unhurriedly.
Ahead of it came slower clouds
The color of pencil lead.
They stopped and lowered,
Squatted over the area and
started drizzling,
A fine mist at first, almost a spray,
Then, honest rain from thick blue folds
Fanned out in several shades of white,
More shades of that color
Than you normally see,
The thin ledges of solidness
Appeared.
I went back inside, the cold had
Gotten into me.
The finger tips were going numb
Then the stillness
of heavy limbs swishing
Finally, to the ground.
The temperature was forecast in
The lower forties, gave gray light,
little breeze,
Ten knots at most, not enough
To stir the trees.
The next morning early
It took a hand axe to break
Through to water, for the birds.
There was some bite to it, even at that,
But not sharp enough for a good coat,
Three-shirt weather maybe, a hat,
But no gloves.

Afternoon darkened around one,
Wind dropped to occasional puffs,
The moisture continued sifting
To the ground...
Taking the ambient feel with it,
While the bite sunk deeper in,
further down.
Sunset approached, rapidly going
to straight cold.
The wind changed its mind,
started back up,
The odd twig took on glaze while
I watched ice form
For the first time ever...
A house cat will watch prey
That way, bird or rodent.
A water dish for my birds,
Shot thin frozen watery spines
The size of sewing needles
From the outer edge of the bowl, in,
Toward the center.
Every other droplet of water
evolving to sleet,
What Inuits call popcorn snow
It hits and rolls an inch or two,
Stops, doesn’t melt but
Accumulates...
In the water bowl now,
pieces of clear ice

The ice was clear husks
on the live-oak leaves,
The grass rasped when you
stepped into it,
Crunched, but not
in the dry, cereal-flake summer sound.
The tree limbs clicked away
And if you didn’t watch the
Steps you made
The clear ice would sit you down.
And the rain kept on...
The last afternoon of freezing rain,
The wind slowly clocked
around to the south,
Warm air came easing in off
The Gulf, the husks on leaves
began letting go.
I wished I had had a tin roof
To stand under, only
so I could absorb
The pelting hits of the husk ice falls.
It will be a while before
I hear this again.
The older folks here
Haven’t seen this kind
of ice in twenty years,
I have not lived in it
since nineteen fifty one
But don’t wish it back on anyone.
All the time it never became
cold enough
To make standing water
on the ground
Harden up solid
Only on that which was raised,
like a water dish,
Or a highway bridge or overpass,
Yesterday I went out
, with two-cycled saw
I watched all the plants I know, as the
Limbs caught dripping rain,
Sit still and go
Slowly under forming icy glass.
To clear the downed limbs away,
Several were larger
than ten inches across,
It was weather opposite
to the iced- in days.
No gray for a hundred miles around,
Sunlight bright enough
to let you see clear in,
Take a hard look at the loss and
even warm you,
If you stood still...
I did not, there was too much to do...
Form outward in feathery, spiny veins, noise,
Walking out next day
I heard tree limbs loaded with that ice
give way,
Crack, with the singular sound
of a heavy caliber rifle,
Fired a good distance away.
The reports came one at a time,
minutes apart,
Splitting the quiet with the echo
hung in inner air,
Like an arrhythmic heart,
As if sniper’s rounds were being fired,
Or a man stalking a bull Elk
In the Rocky Mountains had zeroed
In for a kill...
I listened at the twisting, groaning
After running the saw
until my arms couldn’t
Hold it anymore, I headed back.
Along my track I looked at the steam
Coming off the trunks
of the up-sun trees
After the light and heat had hit them,
Warmed them up,
Wondered at the fragile,
curling wreathes of
What looked very much like smoke,
The stillness was filled
with indescribable noise
And Nothing spoke.
eQue te vaya bien, eh?
