Austin job
Menton Murray, Jr. announced that
he would be a candidate in the
Democratic Primary for State Repre-
sentative for District 51. a position held
by his father Menton J. Murray for the
past 25 years. The elder Murray
announced at a banquet held in his
honor Friday night that he would not
seek re-election.
Murray. 31. an attorney, resigned
last month from the position of assistant
district attorney to enter private practice
in Harlingen. He is married to the
former Lori Betancourt and the couple
has one child, 21 month old Menton 111.
Murray, a native of Harlingen, attended
local parochial and public schools and
was graduated from Harlingen High
School. He holds B.A. and J.D. degrees
from the University of Texas.
After graduation from law school,'
Murray served as an Assistant Attorney
General in Austin, assigned to the
section handling the trial of condemna-
tion. After two years he returned to
Harlingen as City Prosecutor in the
Municipal Court.
‘Must’ game
with Donna
Mercedes will pit its four game
winning streak against Donna’s five
game record when the two clubs battle ,
Friday at Donna in the most crucial
basketball game of the season for the
Tigers.

will mark the beginning of the second
half of the district season for both clubs.
Tigers will concentrate on stopping
Donna’s Keith Frase who ran up 26
points in the first game. In the event of
a Mercedes win, and an unbeaten record
for both clubs the remainder of the
season, the two would meet in a play-off
situation at the end of the regular
season.
Tuesday the Tigers defeated Fal-
furrias at Falfurrias by a 59 to 30 score.
Wes Herndon lead the 'attack, with 14
points.
Last Friday Mercedes knocked off
Raymondville with a 62 to 52 win. In the
game Jerry Wade was high man with 18
points, followed by Rey Cano with® 15
and Alex Lopez with 12.

Mrs. Colleen Ferguson was again
hired as the executive secretary for the
chamber.
It was reported that 85 local
businesses and individuals are now on

An ‘important meeting’ for members
of the Mercedes Quarterback Club has
been called for Thursday at 8 p.m. at the
Rodeway Inn, according to ‘Chipper’
Zamora. Coach Zamora says that plans
will be finalized at that meeting for

“We’re in the middle of a $700,000
program for telephone expansion in
Mercedes that began in 1973 and will
extend through this year,” said Robert
Guerrero, manager for Southwesterm
Bell.
Statewide, Guerrero said, Southwest-
ern Bell will spend more than $10 million
a week, or half a billion dollars, in 1974.
“The yearly influx of more than

said Guerrero.
Guerrero said these factors contri-
buted to a gain of more than 200
telephones between 1972 and 1973.

and Sheep Exposition last weekend and

Candy received $3.05 per pound for
her 98 pound Hampshire-Suffolk from
Wood Implement Company of Donna.
Cindy Hild was second in the senior
division of the showmanship contest.
Other Mercedes entries that placed
on the top 12 included Buddy Williams,
who received $1.75 per pound for his 96
pound lamb from Burton Auto Stores of
the Valley; Karen Williams, with an 89
pound entry that was sold for $1.65 per
pound to Tullis Office Supply of
Mercedes; and Debbie Williams who
sold her 88 pound animal to Bookout and
Mitchell Supply for $1.65 per pound.
Named as “Blue Jean Queen” at the
show was Dana Weisser of Elsa, junior
at Edcouch-Elsa high school and the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Weisser.

call volumes as indicators of Mercedes’
growing business activity. Long
distance calls shot up more than 150 per
day over daily volumes in 1972, while
Directory Assistance calls reflected gains
over the previous year,” said Guerrero.

Captain Gough
is high finisher
Air Force Captain Jamie Gough, III
and his professional golf partner, Mike
Morley, were in eleventh place after
three days of the recent Bing Crosby
Golf Tournament, only to have their
fourth round and a chance at a higher
finish rained out.
Captain Gough, nephew of Mrs.
Elizabeth Moursund of Mercedes, and
the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs.
James P. Gough, had qualified for the
tournament because of his earlier wins in
the Air Force and Inter-service
tournaments. Gough and Morley were 11
under par with first three day scores of
70-65-66 over the Cypress Point,
Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach courses.
Morley won $3,076 for his finish and
Gough, as an amatuer, won non-cash
prizes.
