Consumers Tell Architects, ‘More Informal Space

Institute of Architects

pleted the first in a
series of Home Design
Trends Surveys. The
survey identified a sig-
nificant shift in con-
sumer preference from
formal living and din-
ing rooms towards
The architects also say
homes are still grow-
ing. More than 40 per-
cent of architect firms
working on residential
projects reported that
the square footage of
homes is increasing.
Only 13 percent say
the average square
heights are increasing,
and techniques to
increase volume —
such as two-story
entryways and vaulted
ceilings — are popu-
lar. Almost half the
firms report growing
demand for finished
basements and attics,
often the result of
owners of older homes
looking to increase liv-
ing space.
A majority of archi-
tects report homes are
being made more
accessible with fea-
tures such as wider
hallways, fewer steps

The housing boom has
been good for archi-

Almost half of
responding architects
report an increase in
upscale landscaping
and the popularity of
outdoor living spaces,
such as decks, porches
and patios. Thirty per-
cent note an increase
in outdoor amenities,
such as swimming
pools, tennis courts
and gazebos, while 17
percent said these fea-
tures were declining.
“Our data demon-
strates that the remod-

strongest sectors in the
residential market for
first quarter 2005,”
says Kermit Baker,
