SPRING CAN'T BE
TOO FAR AWAY
With the warmer weather
many of us feel the urge to do
some work in the yards and
gardens.
Here is a February check
sheet to help you plan what
needs to be accomplished.
1. Consider the possibility of
using ground covers in those
hard to mow areas of the yard.
2. In heavy traffic areas
where grass is difficult to
grow consider using concrete,
flagstone or brick Gravel can
also be used if confined with a
good edging.
COMPLETE
BRAKE JOB
3 Give yourself more time
to enjoy your outdoor living
area by using redwood, brick
or some of the new heavy duty
plastic edging materials to
separate the lawn area from
shrub, ground cover or flower
beds.
4 To eliminate hours of
hand trimming next to
buildings and raised flower
beds place a row of bricks or
cement blocks against the
foundation. The top of the
brick or blocks should be just
flush with the soil level This
will provide a free wheeling
surface for your lawn mower
5. Check the credentials of
any door-to-door salesman of
garden services. If they can
offer no references or perma-
nent address, check with the
local Chamber of Commerce.
Many of the self-styled tree
surgeons seldom know one
tree from another, much less
how to care for them.
6 Continue to select and
plant any needed woody
landscapeplants. Plant accor-
ding to a plan, don’t plan as
you plant.
7. Don't neglect newly
transplanted plants Water
when needed but don’t keep
the soil saturated.
8. Prune established hybrid
■ tea and floribunda roses.
Delay pruning climbing roses
until after the peak of the
spring bloom.
9. Complete all dormant
season pruning of evergreens
and summer flowering plants
in late February and early
March Delay pruning spring
flowering plants until after
they finish blooming. These
include among others the
Azalea, Spireae, and flower-
ing quince.
10 Keep lawn area clear of
fallen leaves. Place them in
the compost heap.
11. Apply a complete
fertilizer to the lawn in late
February or early March. Use
an 8-8-8 or equivalent mix at
the rate of 15 to 20 pounds per
1000 square feet of lawn area.
12. Sow the following seeds
in protected flats for trans-
planting later: Asters, Candle-
stick Tree, Coleus, Cosmos,
Petunias, Dusty Miller, Gera-
nium, and Periwinkle to name
a few
13. The following flower
seeds may be sown directly in
properly prepared flower beds
this month: Balsam, Calendu-
la, Coneflower. Delphinium,
Four O’Clocks, Hollyhocks,
California Poppy, Annual
Phlox, and Nasturtium.

14 Check new plant growth
for aphids Control with
Malathion or Diaginon.
15 Pansy beds need another
light application of fertilizer
for good growth and flower
production
is Keep those blankets,
boxes, and other materials
handy to protect tender plants
liom a sudden winter storm
17 Begin planting Gladiolus
corms, space plants dates at 1
weeks intervals to extend the
flowering, season
18 Use dormant oil spray on
fruit trees, and other scale
susceptible plants to control
scale insects See L 245 Texas
Guide for Controlling Insects
and Diseases on Fruits and
Nuts, and L-119, Texas Guide
for Controlling Insects on
Ornamental Plants, for com-
plete details.
19. Fruit and nut trees
should be fertilized this
month
20. Fruit trees should be
pruned by late February.
21. Dahlia tubers should be
planted in late February
22 As soon as soil is dry
enough to work, hoe or
cultivate the annual beds
prepared last month to kill
any germinating weeds.
23. Be patient, spring will
soon be here
