These tiny brine shrimp,
measuring less than a half-
inch long, are being used by
the Dow Chemical Company
in Freeport, Tex., as part of
a wastewater treatment
facility. Once primarily a
source of fish food, the
shrimp eat algae in the
second of two treatment
pools. The algae is used in
the first pool containing
waste solids' Federal
agencies required Dow to
clean the water before it
emptied into the Brazos
River.

Shrimp Fight Pollution
FREEPORT, Tex- (UPD - Brine shrimp, valued
primarily as a source of tropical fish food, are being used
successfully as de-polluters of saltwater at Dow Chemical
Co. plants
The $500,000 experiment, which may prove to be a major
money saver, is part of Dow’s response to Environmental
Protection Agency demand that company waste dumped in
the Brazos River be as pollutionfree as possible by Nov 15,
1976.
"WE LIKE TO call it doing it nature's way," said Jim Case
of Dow "The conventional process requires chemicals to do
something that (with the shrimp) we can do all nature's
way "
Ninety-five per cent of Dow pollution, including suspended
solids, is already removed in bacteria ponds, but under 1972
EPA rules Dow must also get rid of the remaining 5 per cent
which stains the Brazos red
in the algae brine shrimp experiment, the algae in the first
pond consume the leftover suspended solids and color the
wastewater blue-green
in the second pond, the shrimp — quarter-inch, brown,
feathery creatures whose eggs are sold for fish meal — eat
the algae and clear the effluent
CASE SAID preliminary indications are the approach, now
being used on one-ten thousandth of Dow's 20,000 gallonper-
minute effluent, would be cheaper to operate than a con-
ventional system, which Dow also is building
"The conventional process, for example, uses 110,000
kilowatts of electricity per day." Case said "This process
would use in the neighborhood of 825
"And it (the standard process) requires land fill handling
and space because you end up with removed solids "
Aside from cutting operating costs, shrimp eggs produced
in a fully operational algae brine shrimp system at Dow s
plants might be marketable The current selling price is $12 a
pound
Case said the long range effect of the pollutants on the
marketability of the shrimp is unknown

Nutritional Advice

WASHINGTON AP> - Remember driving down the high-

Well, maybe the government should sell nutrition the way
Burma Shave used to sell shaving soap, says Sen Hubert H.
Humphrey, D-Minn. ,
At a hearing this week, federal health officials stressed the
need to encourage Americans to take .more interest in
nutritional eating habits.
It occurred to Humphrey that the Pentagon spends millions
of dollars for roadside advertising in its constant search for
enlistees So, he asked why not billboards telling people that
eating right can help them live longer’
"And believe me. most people would rather live longer
than join the Army," Humphrey suggested
That doesn't mean that signs extolling the virtue of good
eating habits will spring up overnight, but someday, you
might see billboards like this along the freeway:
For Sam and Sue it was the finish.
"When Sam refused to eat his spinach
"He needed: Health. Education and Welfare "
One thing for which the government is well known, how
ever, is the competitive spirit among the various depart-
ments and bureaus that make it up Therefore, you can ex-
pect other agencies to get into the act
“Throat feel scratchy’ Cough and choke?
■ "We tried to tell you not to smoke
"Listen to your Surgeon General."
If the campaign works, you can expect the military to ditch
, its old advertising campaigns and begin slapping up Burma
Shave-style signs along more fertile fields
“Is your old car hard to crank?
"Trade it for our Patton tank
“—The U.S Army"
And then, one day, no doubt the ultimate in roadside signs
'Fight pollution, if you please.
“By ripping off dumb signs like these
“—Environmental Protection Agency ”

Shark Turns Up In Dallas
DALLAS (UPD) - Officials say a three foot shark found in
a small creek probably was put there by pranksters
“Something like this happens every summer," Jeff W
Moore, city aquarium superintendent, said "It was
probably someone having some fun I guess we still have (the
movie) 'Jaws' to thank for this ".
The sand shark was found this past weekend by three teen
agers who were bicycling near Joe’s Creek in north Dallas
The shark was dead 7
“I was kind of scared and did think about it biting me." Jim
senuessler. 15, Mid “But I was more curious
The shark was the second one found in the area in the past
couple of weeks A three-foot shark was hooked by a
fisherman in a fresh water creek in nearby Arlington it was
alive. -—-----
