Canoeing
Low cost way of boating
Some years back I knew a fella
who was a writer and loved hunting
and fishing, and he sought to merge
these components into an income-
producing activity. The trouble was,
he really knew very little about
hunting and fishing. So, he picked
the brains of those who did, rewrote
their tales in first person singular,
and suddenly was selling regularly
to outdoorsy-type publications. He's
learned a lot since, and today is a
capable and respected outdoor
writer.
Well, I don't want you to labor
under any delusions, so right up
front I’ll confess I am not a conoeist
(canoer?). I've never ever been in
one of the things, but more by cir- .
cumstances than choice. We all have
mental lists of things we’d someday
like to get around to trying — like
scuba diving, bobsledding, deep sea
fishing, skydiving — but never seem
to because we lack one or more of
the vital ingredients: time, money,
opportunity.
WE TEND TO think of the man
who takes to water under said as
being the most fanatic about his
particular type of boating, but the
conoeist can't be far behind I once
lived in a near wilderness area of
Michigan's Upper Peninsula where
canoeing approached cultism.
Equipment displayed on a vehicle
established a pecking order A car-
top conoe carrier was one thing, but
with a canoe stoutly lashed to it was
quite another, and if you had two
canoes on top, well, what more could
a man ask?
And why not? What other type of
boating can you get involved in that
can be so flexible, yet cost so little?
With a conoe you can fish, paddle,
drift, portage or run rapids; you can
hang a small outboard on some;
with others you can raise a hort
mast, drop an outrigger over the
side and hoist sail.
THE BOATING Industry
Association (BIA) in Chicago has
been looking into the canoe market,
and reports there are upward of one
million in the country now, and
annual sales are nearing 100,000
units. Home come?
It is a back-to-nature movement,
some manufacturers say, perhaps a
bit too romantically, symbolizing a
resurgence of individuality. While
this may be true, said a BIA
researcher, that’s not the whole
story.
“Price is certainly a major con-
sideration," researcher Marianne
Napier said. "Canoeing is the most
economical form of boating, and a
canoe can make an ideal first boat
for a young couple, or a small second
boat for the more established
family."
CANOES ARE lightweight, vir-
tually maintenance free with
aluminum and fiberglass con-
struction, and create no knotty
storage problems back home. Turn
it upside down on a couple of
sawhorses and that's It.
Pricewise, only an old inner tube
could put you on the water much
cheaper. While I haven't done anv
actual hull kicking lately, I have
found listed prices ranging from
about $250 for an 11-footer up to
almost $6,000 for a 34-footer. That
one would hardly be a cartopper,
anyway.
I still don't see too much outward
evidence of canoe enthusiasm
around Denton, but it's not for lack
of opportunity. A small stock tank
can provide a learning site, and
there are several lakes within easy
driving distance, all with enough
back bays and shoreline shallows to
provide a margin of safety even for
beginners.
MANY TEXAS canoeists consider
the Guadalupe River one of the best
places in Texas to canoe, but they
also agree it’s no place for a novice.
A report in the Dallas Morning News
a few months ago said, “A survey
last October by the United States
Canoeing Association found more
traffic along a 20-mile stretch of the
Guadalupe than any other river in
the world.”
Closer to home, some trips
suggested by area canoeists in-
clude:
—From Lake Grapevine down
Denton Creek to the Elm Fork of the
Trinity.
—From Lake Lewisville to
Carrollton along the Elm Fork.
It there is a local canoeing club in
existence. I haven't heard of it, but if
you want to pursue this particular
brand of boating write to the
American Canoe Association (4260
East Evans Ave., Denver, Colo.,
80222), and I'll bet they'U fill your
mailbox with information.
