Corpus Ohristi, Aug. 5.—Capt.
Mike Niland, recently at Browns-
ville with the Corpus Base Ball
Club, last night shot and killed Al-
bert Sheldon, the catcher of the club.
No details but it is supposed to have
occurred through Sheldon inter-
ference in Niland's domestic af-
fairs.
The Cronista of this morning
calls attention to a new" custom
house wrinkle. It appears that the
Messrs Mendez desired to open for
a short time a photograph gallery
at Reynosa, but when they went to
get out a custom house permit to
carry their apparatus there, were
refused, on the plea that, as Reyno-
sa had no custom house, their ma-
terial must remain there, or " be
consumed there." As camaras etc.,
are neither eaten or worn, it is pro-
bable that under this ruling Rey-
nosa must remain shut out from
many benefits of civilization. Does
an unfortunate inhabitant of that
burg need a leg cut off, he must die,
asa doctor cannot take his case of
instruments there and bring them
away, they must be left to " bo con-
sumed there, " by rust of course.
Scientists, artizans and artists must
be ever shut <mt from Reynosa, be-
cause though they can take their
tools in they cannot take them out
again. Reynosa can have no ma-
chinery nor mechanics, unless they
settle there permanently. The na-
tive eart^ernware will never be re-
placed by tins, because the travel-
ling tinker would be sternly ruled
out of the country by the new ar-
ancel, or at least its interpretation
by the powers here. We think a
treasury ruling is badly needed to
convert Reynosa lrom a Chinese
walled city into a modern town
situated in an American republic.

The warmth of the theater was
the only bar to the pleasure of the
evening. AV ould it not be a good
idea to have the hops in summer ou
the fine dancing floor over the car
sheds at Santa Cruz. The place is
safe, spacious and retired, while
there is not a cooler or more breezy
location in the limits of the heroic
city.
Loudon, July 30—The fail-
ure of "William Upward, a
rather important bear, is an-
nounced at the stock exchange.
His etnbarassment is due to
an advance in American rail-
way securities. The failure
of George Hazel tine, an Ame
rican jobber, is announced.
Rome, July 30—The papa
allocution delivered during the
consistory today, condemns
the Italian government for itw
action in prohibiting the pub-
lic carrying of the sacrament
through the streets to the siek
ami for permitting the assent
blage in Rome of the anti-
clerical congress recently held
iu the holy city. It also re-
news the papal protest against
the government's occupation of
the city of Rome, The pope

which, he says, has increased
the difficulties with France.

Winnipeg, July 30—In the
Kiel trial at Regina yesterday,
the remainder of the crown
witnesses were examined ara
the case for the prosecution
closed. The evidence bore
chiefly on the part taken by
the prisoner in inciting to re
hellion and leading the half-,
breeds.

Riel 'e counsel practically gives
up the light and will rest the
entire defense upon the plea
of insanity. The oi<;ht wit*
nesses for the crown examined

by the crown were in Riel's
handwriting, and all signed by
him, directing half-breeds to
join the rebels and raid forts

Notwithstanding the heat of the
weather the hop of the Casino l ui
on, given last evening in honor of
the return of Don Juan Vails, was
very well attended, some thirty
couples being present. The grand
piano, under the skillful hands of
a number of young ladies and gen-
tlemen, gave forth its sweetest notes
ami the dance was kept until one
p. in. Beside the members resident
and young gentlemen present
we noted Gen. I. Martinez, Mr. J.
F. Vails, Don Miguel Seuzencau,
Don Francisco Fuentes-Farias, Sr.
Demetrio Salazar, who presided
molt admirably nt the piano, and a
number of otHeials. The ladies, in

Constantinople, July 30—
Said Pasha, the grand vizier,
continues to grow worse iu
his illness. He is now becom-
ing insane. His incapacity
delays the Anglo-Turkish ne-
gotiations about Egypt. It is
rumored here that England
meditates conferring with the
other powers to obtain their
endorsement for settling the

the consent of Turkey in the

Portland, July 30.,—The
county jail of Baker City, Ore-
gon, was burned Wednesday
morning. Fivo prisoners were
cremated, and a sixth severely
scorched One of the. prison-
ers complained of feeling sick,
and the jailor stepped across
the street to a drug store to
get some medicine. A mo-
ment later the alarm of lire
was given. The building was
of wood, and the fire spread
rapidly. The doors were bro-
ken open, but the llames and
smoke drove the crowd re-
peatedly back. With great
difficulty Fred. Winkleman,
the half fitted murderer of
Allen Rivers, was dragged
from his cell insensible and
badly burned. The five other
prisoners in the jail were
abandoned to their fate.
Every appearance indicates
that the jail was set on fire by
Winkleman, doubtless to mnke
his escape during the cxeitc-
inent.
Madrid, July 30— The num-
