Yours of t^ie 2^ of March was reed, a fev days ago. Ye were much
pleased and gratifyed to hear from our old Friends and acquantances
in that country but are sorry to hear you complain of being poor
which is at least a little inconveniant. as yet we cannot boast of
wealth in this an country. Me have had hard strugleing to get a long^
here so far we have plenty of fine lands and hope an soon as they
come into market to be able to live h&tt better and easer than we
have I will now endeavour to answer your enquiries as correctly as
I can. Vou ask me what could you do here, their are many things
you might do and unfortunately for us their is too much employment
for gentlemen^ of y^ur profession from 'he careless manner which
many of the emprasoriors or contractors for collonising have con-
ducted their business will be the cause much litigation though
I am hapy to say such will not be the caLe in any of Austins Colonies.
2^. Is the Kovt now stable and the lawsxxBaxx regarded in full force,
answer I bcleave our govt is n.)W established dn sound principles and
h have no dout of its stability and our laws are as rigidly inforced
as in any country I ever lived in on this subject I refer you to the
Statement of the Iditor of the Brazos Courier of the 10th Instant'
which statement is not exagerated. 3^ have you a sistematic virtuous
and honest Judiciary. Answer, our courts are all regalarly organised
and I bele^ve have generally gave satisfaction. 4th. have the People
who run ofjjjfrom the U. S. to pay their debts. Answer those coming
in since the revolution I beleave h.-ve to pay I have not heard of
any of the first settlers havtng to pay old debts
