The correspondent of the London
Tvlcyruph, trom Paris, March 8, gives
the following account of the execu-
tion of au asstosiu:
Lent aire, the cjuical young assas-
sin, of whose case I sent you a sum-
mitry at the liuie of his trial a fort-
night ago, was guillotined this morn-
ing. Yoa will remember that he had
deliberately murdered a woman whom
his father wus about to marry, In
court he uot only pleaded guilty bnt
gloried in his crime. He stated that
his "plan" was to murder first his fu-
ture step-mother and her family, *iy1
iheu to kill his father; afterward be
nieaut to rob the house, and "/aire la
hoc?"—* jlkng. French phraae, the
only equivalent for which is to "have
some fuu'1 with the money and then
surrender. He told the court that
life of hard work would not suithim,
aud he made a speech to tUe fury,
pointing out that this was not a case
for extenuating circumstances, and
told the court that his judges would
have ugieatdeal to auswer lor if they
did not sentence him to death. The.
jury, for a wutidei, brought in a ver-
dict of guilty, without extenuating
circumstances, and sentence of deatk
was duly reoorded against him. Ho
refused to appeal to the Court of
Cessation, and Btubbornly declined
to be in any way a party to the efforta
of his counsel to obtain a compute*
lion of punishment from the Empe-
ror> mercy. His advocate, however,
used his utmost endeavor's to save the
life of tliis precocious murderer; but
t^ie evidence of the medical men who
examined him was conclusive aa to
the absence of any indication ot
anything like insanity, add it was de-
termined to let the luw take U&
course.
For several days past, the Place de
la U.'tj'iette, where executions now
take pluee, has been thronged by
that motley crowd which the guillo-
tine always brings together. Night
alter night, iu spite of the sleet and
iro t, thousands had iu< t iu the dingy
and narrow street which leads to the
dismal little square. This morning
tiie perseverance ol' these amateurs
ol the guillotine was rewarded—the
sinister-looking machine was being
put up by torchlight. Presently, a
large body of troops aud poilce
uiai cited up, aud cleared ihe square,
so that the ctowd, driven iutoftbe
back streets, wasaittr all cheated out
of its treat—to.see fhe fall of tW>
knife. Hut some dilettanti who occu-
pied the windows of' neighboring
wine shops, had a fujl view of the
ghastly scene. As day was breakiug,
about 5:30 o'clock, the executioner
and his staff made" their appearance
on the platform, aud immediately
proceeded to «ee that the machine
was in good working order, by twice
letting the knife fall. Meanwhile iiu.
attendants brought up a number «
pails of water, und a number of ban*

The Hong Kong Press gives the fol-
lowing account ol -how street robbers
are dealt within that city :
About half-pest eleven a villainous
looking fellow nauied Luuiakwong
was charged with snatching a pair ot
silver ear-rings from the person of a
woman in Taipingshan street. The
woman said she was walking along
the street at about eleven o'clock,
when prisoner suddenly came up bo-
hind and snatched the rings from her
ears. .She immediately called out,
aud a constable who was near seized
the prisoner. The constable corrobo-
lated her statement, and added that
he found the rings before the Court on
prisoner's person. 11 is worship told
the prisoner that he would just make
an example of him for the benefit of
others of his class, and sentenced him
to tfix months' haul labor aud a flog-
ging of tweuty strokes, to be admin-
istered immediately on the spot
where the robbery was comnytted.
The prisoner was at ouce taken into
the jail, his head shaved, a descrip-
tion of the crime on two boards hung-
around his neck, and was made lo
carry his owu cat. At twelve o'clock
lie was led down to Taipingshan
street, and there received twenty
lashes. So that the crime and pun-
ishment both took place on the saino
spot in about one hour.
