Military Aid To
Foreign Nations
Making Progress
WASHINGTON, May 8,
(UP) — A defense department
spokesman said today that the
foreign military aid program
is "well under way" with arms
shipments now going to all of
the eight western European
nations.
The fourth shipment for
France — naval carrier-type
planes—is now being loaded
aboard the aircraft carrier Dix-
mude at Norfolk, Va., he said.
Two shipments of naval air-
craft, small arms, heavy artil-
:ery, trucks and jeeps have
been delivered to France and
a third shipload is on I lie seas,
the spokesman said.
Other arms shipments have
gone to Great Britain, Norway
and Italy, and vessels are en
route to the Netherlands, Den-
mark, Belgium and Luxem-
bourg, he said.
R-29 bombers for the Royal
Air Force are being delivered
to Great Britain on an "inter-
mittent schedule as they are
readied," the spokesman said.
He declined to say how many
have been flown to England or
how many will be, but British
sources have set the figure at
approximately 70.
Now that shipments are
"moving in all directions," the
spokesman said, increased im-
portance attaches to the train-
ing of western European mili-
tary personnel in the use of
American weapons.
About 95 French pilots, navi-
gators and technicians left Nor-
folk by train Thursday for
training at Randolph Air Base,
San Antonio, Tex., and Elling-
ton Air Force Base, Houston,
Tex.
Forty French Naval trainees
will leave Norfolk Monday for
Philadelphia for training on
destroyer escorts being reacti-
vated for the French Fleet.
An additional 40 Dutch nav-
al personnel arrived yesterday,
the defense department spokes-
man said, to train on destroy-
er escorts being reactivated ai
Boston for the Dutch Fleet.
Some Dutch sailors are now in
training at the Boston navy
yard.
Military personnel of other
Atlantic Pact Military Aid
countries will arrive here soon,
the spokesman said.
