PREsidENT's
Message
Have been shocked by sleep away deaths of two members and
close friends within a week. Bob Kampling of C/66, and Ray
Ince of Headquarters and director of the museum. It makes you
think "am I next or who else is next and have we prepared for
our deaths?" It reminds me that I haven't written to my sons
what to do if I lay around in a coma or something like that and
what my wishes are. To the families of Bob and Ray and all
others with deaths, my deepest sympathies. What a horrible way
to start off.
Good news: the taped interviews from members can be placed
on the website and the first one will be on concentration camp
liberations, as a test. Will try to get five to 10 more on as my
time allows and the availability of technicians. The available
materials have been scanned and an additional 1,500 pages will
be added in this month. This will conclude this phase of the
website. The next phase is the accumulation of information
about details of battles, other than Herrlisheim, to finish the
battles section. I find it impractical to try to reproduce the
history books because of time and cost restraints. I estimate
about $100,000 and a year of time. Still would be a great thing.
The proxy voting and ballots are repeated from the July issue.
Please exercise your vote.
Again, the quality of the Hellcat News is being diminished
because of lack of interest of members to generate newsworthy
items to help their unit's representatives. Please do your part and
write your Reps.
Try to get to the reunion. Get your reservations in now.
Sincerely,
Bob Hoeweler [C/66]
Tank with Measles - John Critzas [A/714], left, and George Hatt
[AJ17] are proud of the new arrival at the 12th Armored Mu-
seum: an M4A6 Sherman tank. Those are not enemy pockmarks
on the tank. They came thanks to the U.S. Air Force, which used
it as a target.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The July HCN was missing a number of
columns. Many of them are included in this issue in addition
to the A ugust columns. ~Frank Barndollar

If you are planning on attending (and I sure hope you are) the
60th Annual Reunion in Bloomington, MN, on Sept. 6th through
the 10th, this issue will be the last one before that convention. In
fact, the September issue will not even be printed by the 6th of
September. Therefore it is extremely important that those of you
that have not filled in the reservation forms for the association
and the hotel need to "get on the ball." DO IT RIGHT NOW!
Our reunion chairman, Ward McGill [B/66] and his commit-
tee have worked long and hard to accommodate you and make
certain that you and your family and guests will have a
convention that you will always remember.
There are members of the association who firmly believe that
the 12th Armored Division Association National Reunion has
served us well over the years. However it has seen its best days
and it is time to "stand it down." The predominating reason is
that it does not represent the majority of the members of our
total roster. With this thought in mind it magnifies the urgency
to attend this upcoming 60th Reunion. Who can say how many
more there will be?
I have received word that our Div. Arty HQ Battery Comman-
der, Captain Bill Workman, is in the hospital. Bill and his
wife, Connie, have always been our two leading people that
have planned our Div. Arty Group meetings over the years. It is
our hope and prayers they he will get well soon. I will keep you
posted on any news concerning "Captain Mac."
Pete and Fran Higbie [DIV/ARTY] have been very helpful
in getting the word out to our Div. Arty Group about the
information regarding the National Reunion in Bloomington,
MN. They have even mailed copies of the Hellcat News
concerning the reservations. Thanks, Pete and Fran.
Convention chairman Ward McGill has set aside Friday, Sept.
8, as the day for the ASTP luncheon and has obtained a guest
speaker by the name of Job Phom. He was born and raised in
Vietnam and his topic will be "What Freedom Means to Me."
This should be interesting; don't miss it. Hope to see you at the
Reunion, look for the hospitality room.
There are many events in this old world and some are small
and minute; however others are very noteworthy. Some events
