Author of GI Bill
Dies at age 85
Jackson, MS - Former Rep. Gillespie V. "Sonny" Montgomery,
who during his 30 years in Congress pushed through a modernized
GI Bill that boosted recruiting for the all-volunteer force, died
recently. He was 85.
Montgomery, who underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction in
December, died after a lengthy illness. The House voted to name
a national defense authorization bill in his honor.
"The good he did for veterans is a national accomplishment, but
he accomplished so much in so many areas that all Mississippians
are grateful for his service and leadership," Mississippi Governor
Barbour said.

lando 1984 Reunion. John is presenting him with the Mr. Hell-
cat Award.
A conservative Democrat, Montgomery represented an east-
central Mississippi district in Congress from 1967 to 1997, and for
13 years chaired the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
He himself was a 35-year military veteran, serving in the Army
in Europe during World War II, then returned to active duty during
the Korean War as part of the National Guard. He retired from the
Mississippi National Guard in 1980 with the rank of major general.
The GI Bill - which has existed in some form since 1944 when
it was passed to provide education and other benefits for returning
WWII veterans - was modernized for a peacetime, volunteer force
as the Montgomery GI Bill in 1984. Among other things, it intro-
duced education benefits to National Guard and Reserve personnel.

heartbreaking.
On May 25, 2006, we laid to eternal rest Norbert H. Bruem-
mer [D/43], a close and true friend of 50 years. I would most
definitely place Norb in the category of a true "Gentleman" first
and foremost. I personally will miss his most valuable advice,
counseling and experience that he gained in his 90 years of life
and also the knowledge of the internal mechanisms of the 12th
ADA.
Norb lived about two hours from my home and it was my
great privilege to call him often and visit him from time to time.
Members attending the funeral were Mark Ault [SV/43], John
Cassella [A/134], Rusty Sathrum [B/43], and yours truly.

According to Mark Ault there were two other members from the
43rd that attended the visitation the night before; however they
did not sign the registry.
Everyone acquainted with Norb and many that were not, say
"well done good friend and for sure we will never forget you."
Every once in a while I get a news item that a granddaughter
or grandson is responsible for and I really enjoy placing them in
the column. My good friend, Hyman Lippman [DIV/ARTY],
sent me one that I want all of you to read about.
Hyman's eight year old grandson, Matthew, drew a line draw-
ing (and it is a good one) showing a likeness of Hyman he
thought Hyman looked like when he was in the Army at the age
of 30, and also a likeness as he pictures grandpa as he is today at
age 92.
In my opinion Matthew did a real good job on the 30-year-old
soldier Hyman. It must be brought out here and now that the rest
of the 12th Armored Division Artillery Battalion group (enlisted
men) except Master Sergeant Richard Manson [DIV/ARTY]
were 18 and 19 years old. We considered them as "Old Guys."
