Hyman, be sure to thank Matthew for his conception on how
you looked then and now. I am sending the line drawing to our
editor with high hopes that he and the printer can work them into
the Hellcat News.
17TH ARMORED INFANTRY BATTALION
William "Bill" Funke, 1312 Alford Street, Ft. Collins, CO 80524
Phone (970) 482-0255 e-mail: fwilliam46@MSN.com
(July column) Another glorious 4th of July has come and gone
and it is our sincere hope that it was a great one for you. We all
miss the "good old days" when as kids we had some fun days with
fireworks, and surely there were some injuries, but today when the
"pros" do the entertaining for us there is a lack of looking forward
to the big day. Oh well, we probably miss coal oil lamps too.
Not too much going on this past month. Little mail, few calls,
etc., but maybe you are just saving up your energy for the mighty
Minneapolis mission. In case that is not the reason for deafening
silence from the 17th, and you have lost this address or phone
number, read this: Bill Funke is the name and writing is my game.
1312 Alford St., Fort Collins, CO 80524; 970-482-0255. That is
the biggest "brick" in the arsenal.
The latest word on the registration for the reunion is that they
are coming in, but since the 17th likes to wait until the last minute
to register it would be a surprise if we had met our quota of 75, or
was 75 the low end of the estimate?
One couple who jumped in early was the one from Super South
Dakota. No, that is not their home. Just wanted to make them, Bob
and Evelyn Cooper [HQ], feel good. In their letter they men-
tioned that this year will be the first time the gathering has not been
in the East or South. They are right, so you Northern types are
getting a break and you are expected to be there. Have they quit
"burning up the road?" Now you know better than that and their
itinerary recently included: Washington, D.C.; Duluth, MN; and
Branson, MO. The Coopers are very family oriented and so are
pleased that one of their own is moving back to South Dakota from
the Chicago area.
Once again you are being asked to send your e-mail address. If
you do you may expect more communications from me. It is not
that the regular mail is so tough, but the electronic mail is so much
easier.
Bob and Ruth Steinmetz [HQ] have been mighty silent for a
long time, but a note came from them telling about the passing of
Velma Lysinger, the wife of Albert [DIV/HQ]. Bob thought that
some of you 17th people would remember them. Albert still lives
in Louisville, KY. Thanks for the information Bob. Now, how
about making your presence part of the scene in Minneapolis?
Tennnnn Hut B Company men. Pat Walker, daughter of
Herbert Walker [B], wants to contact anyone who remembers her
Hellcat father. Sorry we don't have an address or phone number,
but we will try to get them for you. John Critzas got the first
inquiry and now it is up to you to fill in some of the blanks for Pat.
Here is here-mail: genealogist@pjwebworx.com. If you remember
this soldier and don't have an e-mail, use a bit of what we used to
call "field expediency" and go to a neighbor or Kinkos or some-
place.
John Critzas tells me you wouldn't believe how many requests
for information about kin the 12th gets all the time. Isn't it neat
when we can help out these sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc.?
We all get HHOs when we can come up with answers.
Here is a rather strange request from Jack Priestly [C]. Jack
works in the Norman Veterans Center and recently a young lady
working in the Alzheimer unit wanted to know some of the
cadence count chants that were used when we marched hither,
thither and yon. She thinks these may help her connect with some
of the patients. Jack could only remember "Bless 'em All," so he
would like your help in gathering some to help out at the Veterans
Center. Surely you can remember some to send to him (or to me)
for this worthy cause. Yes, I know there are some you wouldn't
want to repeat, but there are those which are OK. "Left, left, I had
a good home but I left," was the chorus, but darned if I can
remember the verses. We will be waiting for your contribution to
the Norman Veteran's Center.
Here is a bit more information on William Strutz, mentioned in
the May issue. In January '45 he was in a repeldepo in Marsielles.
He was a replacement in the 17th around Jan. 19,'45. If this helps,
contact Jim Strutz at the address listed in the May issue of the
HCN.
Time for a break! Surely you all remember such great comics as
Hennie Youngman or Red Buttons, masters of the "one liners." For
your June pleasure try these on. "I just got back from a pleasure
trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport." How about this one?
A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, "You've been
brought here for drinking." The drunk says, "Okay, let's get
started."
On with the important stuff. You are expected to be a part of the
crowd come September in Minnesota. Remember please, the Unit
