District Accepts Cargo Wharf At Point
Comfort; Ganado Calls Bond Election
Thq Calhoun County Navigation
District Board conducted the final
Inspection and acceptance of the
general cargo wharf at Point Com-
fort Wednesday. The wharf, built
at a cost of $489,000 by the L. B.
Hall Construction Co. of Hous-
ton, is a valuable addition to the
area, Jean Day, acting chairman of
the Navigation District, pointed
jout.—Calhoun County Times.
The Ganado City Commission
luts issued notice of a bond election
for Saturday, April 27th to deter-
mine whether or not the City Com-
mission shall be authorized to issue
ibonds for the purpose of purchas-
ing a new fire truck and equip-
ment and for the construction of a
public building to be- used as a
City Hall and Fire Station.—Ga-
nado Tribune.
Wilbur Mitchell has been named
"the new chief deputy for the El
Campo area by Sheriff Mike Flour-
pey, replacing the late Marvin
Powers who passed away recently.

South Texas Construction Co.
'las started work on the 3.83 miles
-of the FM-1090 loop road out by
the Harbor of Refuge. First cul-
vert forms were put in Tuesday.
The road should be completed by

teer Fire Department elected Adrcn
Allen as Fire Chief, succeeding
veteran Arthur Lapp, whose re-
cent death left the office vacant.—

Miss Elsie Swendsen of Dane-
vang was crowned Queen Cotton
at the 29th Annual Cotton Pageant
and Ball Saturday night at Texas
A&M College.—El Campo Citizen.
Erwin A. Pavlik, soil conserva-
tionist with the Soil Conservation
Service in Edna, was announced
Monday as the new president-elect
of the Edna Junior Chamber of
Commerce.—Edna Herald.
Playwright Horton Foote, a na-
tive son of Wharton, was announc-
ed as a winner of an "Oscar" Mon-
day night. Rated the best screen
play adaptation, the award was for
his work on "To Kill A Mocking-
bird".—Wharton Spectator.
In one of the closest races in lo-
cal history, Leonard Mickelson, in-
fcumbent member of the school
board seeking re-election, won by
three votes over Mrs. Paul Hen-
derson in the annual election last
Saturday. Mickelson got a total of
387 votes and Mrs. Henderson re-
ceived 384.—El Campo Leader-
News.
Petitions asking that the terms
of two Calhoun County Navigation
District commissioners which ex-
pire this year be filled by elec-
tion instead of appointment were
presented Commissioners Court
Tuesday and the court authorized
County Judge Howard Hartzog to
call an election. The election will
probably be called for the last
Saturday in May.—Port Lavaca

C. J. Carlson was selected by
his fellow members of the El Cam-
po City Council to serve as Mayor
for the next year. Cecil Kinard
was named Mayor pro-tem.—El

Disappointment was expressed
on final report of the Red Cross
Drive as only $332.52 was col-
lected.
The Sharks outscored and out-
pointed five teams at Bay City
Wednesday to capture the District
79-B track title.
The Volunteer Fire Department
Monday received their emergency
vehicle.
J. G. Smith will be president of
the Lions Club for the next 30 days,
replacing President Glen Dale
Claybourn who was disbarred from
office last week when he showed
,up 10 minutes late at an important
meeting.
Bobby G. Beard was serving on
board the USS General H. W. Bun-
ter as a Fireman Apprentice.
Lt. Guy Claybourn, Jr. had re-
turned from a 11-months tour of
duty in Korea.
Births announced were girls for
Mr. and Mrs. R. B. (Bob) Trull and
Mr. and Mrs. George Harrison on
April 11.
Burl P. Holmes died April 15 of
a heart attack.
The Junior High Hornets captur-
ed three trophies and a track meet
Saturday as they won first posi-
tion in the Industrial Invitational
Meet.

As a result of the White Man's
Union Primary held in Matagorda
County Saturday, a new judge,
two commissioners and a tax as-
sessor-collector were elected. Form-
er county judge Thomas H. Lewis
was returned to his old post when
he defeated Arthur Harris, Jr.,
present judge. Jim Tabb commis-
sioner of Precinct No. 1 was de-
feated by Tom Matthews and in
precinct 4, Elmer Cornett won over
Joe Wright, present incumbent.
Jim Selkirk was elected tax asses-
sor-collector over his opponent,
W. L. Burnell. Harris Milner was
returned to sheriff's office, defeat-
ing Charles W. Wolf and Jimmie
Shearer.
W. H. "Bill" Bauer of Port La-
vaca was guest speaker at the Ro-
tary Club and spoke on Waterways
and their value to local communi-
ties.
Sara Ann Prindle, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Cornell Prindle, was
born on April 10; and Mr. and Mrs.
James B. Gillett announced the
birth of their son, James Stanley
on March 23.
The Houston Youth Symphony
was to appear in Palacios on April
23 for the benefit of the American
Cancer Socicty.
The er.gagement of Miss Claire
Joy Luther to James Colwell Dil-
worth III was announced.
Miss Mary Ruby Erekson and
Louis L. Gurka, Jr. were married
April 11 at the home of the bride's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Erek-
son.

Funeral services for George A.
Harrison were held Monday at St.
John's Episcopal Church.
The Juniors entertained the Sen-
iors with a banquet at the high
school auditorium Saturday night.

his home in this city April 19, he
was 712 years of age.
Troy and Willie Shannon joined
the U. S. Army Corps of Engin-

Mrs. Viola Lipscomb, mother of
Mrs. Carl Backen, pased away at
her home April 20.
A "Sadie Hawkins" dance was
being sponsored by the P. H. S.
band Saturday night.

Mrs. Margareta Eugenia Feath-
er was one of the 100 persons from
nine nations asking for citizenship
papers at the Federal building in
Houston. A native of Rumania, she
came to America the bride of W. R.
Feather.
Officers elected for the ensuing
year by the Rotary Club: L. S.
Applcton, president; Carlton Craw-
ford, vice-president; T. S. Brandon,
secretary and J. F. Barnett, treas-
urer.
T. W. Caffall was elected presi-
dent of the Palacios Independent
School board.
The yearbook for the Sorosis
Club of El Campo, printed in the
Beacon office, won first place in
the Fourth District of Texas, Fed-
erated Women's Club.
A report from the tax assessor-
collector's office showed that 3(526
automobiles were registered in
Matagorda county.
The marriage of Miss Alline Har-
bison to Lowell Jennings of Min-
eral Wells, on Saturday, March 26,
in Ardmore, Okla. was announced
by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J.
Harbison.

Walter Snider pitched a winning
game for the Sharks when they
played the Rockport nine on the
local diamond. The score was 9
to 3.
Tom Tarsutt died at his home in
this city.
The P.-T. A. elected officers for
the ensuing year as follows: Mrs.
C. L. de St. Aubin, president; Mrs.
J. G. Walker, vice-president; Mrs.
G. H. Faubion, secretary and Mrs.
S. F. Malone, treasurer.

Judge W. O. Huggins was guest
speaker at the annual banquet of
the Palacios Chamber of Commerce.
Miss Anita Waters and Dr. Ed-
ward Coyle were united in mar-
riage in the First Presbyterian
Church in an Easter morning ser-
vice.
Mrs. J. W. Boiling, Mrs. R. J.
Sisson, C. F. Bonner and C. W.
Simpson were elected members of
the Palacios School board at the
annual election.
40 YEARS AGO
F. L. Crawford, who died of a
heart attack, was buried in the
Palacios Cemetery with K.K.K. ser-
vices.
W. C. Robinson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. J K. Robinson, was married
to Miss Katie Betz of Houston.

and W. H. Clement were elected
members of the Palacios school
board.
