Assistance Needed.—A family ar-
rived in town some days ago from
Mississippi in ve^y destitute circum-
stances. They are living in the
Northwestern part of the city near
Santa Fe trestle work. The wife is
on the verge of death with consump-
tion, and the husband has been com-
pelled to remain at her bedside.
They have nothing to live on, and
no money.
Dr. Hegnauneij, the physician who
attended on the German lady that
died several days ago in destitution,
comes out in a communication to
the Volksbote, stating that lie was
the physician who attended her, and
making a sling at the Banner for its
comments on the matter. He wholly
fails to give any reason for his sin-
gular silence in regard to the death.
Although it seems he was there at
the time the lady died, no one knew
of her death till the next day.
Bacon and Shakespeare.—T h e
agency for Mr. Donnelly's famous
book which is to establish the fact
that Bacon wrote, the plays common-
ly attributed to Shakespeare has
been secured for this and Austin
county by Professor J. W. McNeely,
of Chappcll Hill. The work will be
out very shortly. The universal
interestthat has been aroused by the
expected appearance of this remark
able work, will doubtless ensure for
it an extensive sale. We commend
Prof. McNeely and the volume to
the reading public.
Mascuerade Bali,.—The masquer-
ade ball at Frohsinu last night v us
attended by quite a number, botl; >m
lookers-on and maskers. Some <i
the makes were exceedin/h 'leauti
ful, and some exceedingly grotesque.
The clown with his cap and bells at-
tracted special attention, and many
of the lady maskers were attired in
costumes, splendid and elegant.
Everything passed off pleasantly and
the ball was thoroughly enjoyed by
all participants. The management
deserves special credit for their tin
tiring efforts to make it a success.
Something New.
On next Tuesday Mr. H. Franke,
the well known hardware dealer and
gunsmith on Ant street, next door
to H. Fisher, who is the agent in
this city for the ' Clirater O k"
stove, will give a freo exhibition of
its cookery powers, with the cele-
brated wire gauze oven doors, to all
who may wish to see it, and be con-
vinced that it is the best stove ever
made. All ladies are especially in-
vited to witness the exhibition.

There is a good deal of complaint
on the part of some citizens living
in different parts of the city that
they have no adequate protection
from fire, and it is hinted by some
that there has been favoritism in the
distribution of mains and hydrants.
The Light Guard is looking out
for suitable drill grounds. They
have two locations in view, but have
as yet made no definite "selection.
With the present enthusiasm mani-
fested by the boys theje is no doubt
that they will be strong competitors
for the first place.

Election.—At a meeting of the
Coder Hill Alliance held on last
Thursday Mi*. L. Eiehholt was elect-
ed president, F. ltiebe, vice presi-
dent, Richard Huebener, secretary.
Mr. Riebe is said to be one of the
most enthusiastic workers, and is in-
fusing new life into the society.
Personal.
City Marshall Swain left yester-
day for New Orleans to spend Mardi
Gras.
Messrs. T. C. Clay, W. P. Dever
and G. W. Booker, of Independece,
were in the city yesterday to attend
the immigration meeting.
ADULTERATION OF LIQUORS.
Report of the Commissioner of Agricul-
ture—Injurious Ingredients in Beer.
Washington, January 8. —The
Commissioner of Agriculture has
just issued the third of a scries of
reports on adulterations of lood,
drinks and drugs. This report
treats of adulterations of fermented
alcoholic beverages, malt liquors,
wine ane cider. The chemist and
analyst by whom the report
made coi'icluf'es that beer is gen-
erally adulterated with acids poi
sonous and injurious to the health.
Of thirty-three samples of beer
analyzed six American beers con-
tained salicylic acid, of which two
were bottle samples of Milwaukee
beer, two from S. Louis, ono lrom
Alexandria, Va., and one from
Philadelphia. The use of glucose
and sugar in malt adulterations is
condemned as injurious to health.
The preserving agents used by
brewers are still more severely
condemned as means ot putting bad
Seer on the market.
•The above report shows the dau-
gerous ingredients used in beer
manufactured for shipment to places
distant from the brewery. The
Loner Star Brewing Company ot
Sao Antonio find a ready sole id
tho State of Texas for all the beer
they make, and theteftrs do not
find it necessary to ose Anything
but strictly pure malt and hops.
C. Minkwits is the Brenhsm agent
for this popular beTerage and will
pay a fair compensation to any
chemist who will find any deleter-
ions substance in it.
