mi the cannery
"per bushel for peach
to fruits all kinds
can be canned, and
certainly no one will deny that vege
tables can be successfully grown
here. Tomatoes would be one of
the chief vegetables to can and these
can be grown here ato perfection
Let our thrifty German farmers
learn that they can find a ready
home market for their fruits and
vegetables, and you can rest assured
that jhey will grow all that can be
used. What advantage other towns
have over BrenhaM a? a site for a
cannery I cannot see, unless it be
that Brenham citizens" haVe less en-
terprise, less get-up about them
than the citizens of other towns. If
the citizens of Brenham seriously
contemplate starting a canning fac
tory, the proper way, I think, would
be to send a committee to the facto-
ries at Tyler or elsewhere, and as-
capital and machinery
t>e required. Major Douglass,
who is at tne head of the principal
cannery at Tyler, is a thoroughly en-
terprising gentleman, and, ! think,
would take pleasure in giving all the
information dtofred.

present immigration movement, es-
pecially to this county. He stated
that the prospects tor the success of
the movement were very flattering.
The railroads had agreed to give re-

intention of the

executive committee of the state to
place creditable exhibits of the prin
cipal productions of the state in all
the large cities. Colonel Giddings
stated that he was opposed to any
drumming by agents to secure im-
migrants. He believed in giving
those whe desired it correct infor-
mation, and letting them act for
themselves, He believed that by
taking advantage of the present op-
f, Washington county could

that now rests upon her. He stated
that it was a matter of deepest re-
gret to him, as chairman of the ex-
ecutive committee, that his own
county had not taken a foremost po-
sition in this movement, and at
times he felt like resigning his posi-
tion. With a peculiar aptiiess, he
characterzied this place as a "Sleepy
Hollow." He made some farther re
marks as tp the plqn to be pursued

which, upon, motion of Mr. Haynes,
