BELLAIRE'S OWN WEEKLY COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER
My daughter along with literally Serving Bellaire, Meyerland, Flack Estates, Robindell, Brae Burn Terrace, Larkwood, Willow Bend, Westbury, and Sharpsto*
scores of thousands of others of our
vast army of young folks, takes off
lor college this weekend. And par-
ents whose kids have been preparing
lor the big event, especially if they
are girls, will realize what this means
to parents. Not only in money, for
such things as wardrobes arc in-
volved along with fees and tuition
and the like, hut wear and tear on
the parental nerves. The excitement
is overpowering.
The thing that is surprising,
wen though wc have read all about
the big crush of students seeking
high education, is the vast amount
of probing, letter writing, filling
out of forms, documents, slips and
what not involved.
Even the search for a place to go
to college is a long affair, though

switches from Texas to Pomona, from
Tulane to Northwestern, from Old
Siwash to Quantico A & M. In our
instance, we wind up at Miami of
Ohio, where—and this provoked an
anguished wail—no cars arc allowed
on campus.
Then comes the search for people
who attend Miami of Ohio to get an
out-of-state recommendation and the
like. More people in Bellaire and
Houston attended Miami! First off,
Boh Martin, Bellaire solicitor, is a
Miami graduate and he wrote a
letter to the powers that be to find
the out-of-state quotas, etc. and
smooth the way.
Then letters, correspondence,
telephone calls. Tsk! And finally
acceptance papers and a long list
of things to bring from the dormi-
tory mother, or sister, or whoever
is in charge of the incoming fresh-
man. All this to get one small girl
in college!
Now, when I went to college,
things were different. I hadn’t even
made up my mind to GO to college
until the day before I went. And this
happened in a rather unusual way,
figuring things from the viewpoint
of 1963.
For the day I decided was mid-
September, 1929. I had been toying
with the idea of broadening myself—
that’s what the principal at my high
school said 1 should do—but I had
been working for Henry Ford at his
Des Moines Assembly plant, too, and
was making five bucks a day. And
that was big money then.
But the plant closed down for
