TXDOT
Rusk ISD committed to education
TxDOT explains new ‘move
over/slow down’ statute
which takes effect Sept. 1
DON NEWBURY
Law protecting 1st
responders now
includes TxDOT
vehicles, workers
September not only brings
the start of fall, but also the
start of a new requirement for
Texas drivers.
The state’s Move Over/Slow
Down law, which traditionally
has required drivers to yield to
police, fire and emergency ve-
hicles, has now been expanded
to provide that same protec-
tion for Texas Department of
Transportation workers.
Effective Sept. 1, drivers
must move over or slow down
when approaching TxDOT
workers and vehicles that
are stopped with overhead
flashing blue or amber lights.
“This law has been saving
the lives of first responders
in Texas since 2003,” said
TxDOT spokesman Larry
Krantz.
“As first responders our-
selves, we’re pleased to be in-
cluded under the protections
this law provides.”
The new addition to the
Move Over law requires mo-
torists to move out of the lane
closest to the TxDOT vehicle
when possible or reduce their
speed to 20 miles per hour
below the posted limit.
If the road does not offer
multiple lanes, the driver
must slow down.
On roadways with posted
speed limits of 25 miles per
hour or less, drivers must
reduce their speed to 5 miles
per hour. Violators can be
fined up to $2,000.
Radio announcements and
statewide billboards will help
raise awareness of the new
Move Over/Slow Down law.

Burleson
A few days ago, it was my
pleasure to speak during
convocation to kick off the
2013-14 school year for per-
sonnel of Rusk ISD. To say
I was impressed with the
group would be a gross under-
statement. I was absolutely
amazed at the goodwill, sense
of teamwork and enthusiasm
that was so evident from the
moment I walked through
the door.
These folks have a tremen-
dous sense of pride in what
they do, and this spills over
positively into the lives of
students with whom they are
entrusted. If I had school age
children, I’d be extremely
pleased if they were students
in Rusk schools.
They are “can do” people,
and their spirit of team-
work is contagious. In fact,
that’s what Dr. Scott Davis
called the educators: “TEAM
RUSK.”
And their teamwork is like-
wise evident in the coopera-
tion extended with so many
partners who also believe in
the importance of education.
I am glad the Cherokeean-
Herald is such a partner.
I’ve had opportunities,
across the decades, to address
hundreds of such events.
There has been no group —
not even one — that I believe
to have been more positive,
committed and capable than
the good folks of Rusk ISD.
I know you are proud of
your school board, headed
by Rodney Hugghins, and of
your schools, led by your ca-
pable and deeply committed
superintendent, Dr. Davis.
May their kind increase!
New sound system needed
at Cherokee County Courthouse
JOSIE D. SCHOOLCRAFT
Rusk
An open letter to County
Judge Chris Davis and Com-
missioners Kelley Traylor,
Steve Norton, Katherine Pi-
notti and Byron Underwood:
Will the court please put in
the budget the cost for a new
sound system? The one the
court uses now is terrible.
The only members of the
court that can be heard is
Judge Davis, Commission-
ers Norton and Underwood.
Surely a new system can-
not cost that much. I would
even be willing to make a
donation to the county to
pay for one.
Thank you for your consid-
eration of this matter.
