A recap of last week’s action
for teams in Jacksonville, Bul-
lard and Brook Hill:
Indians hold off Hallsville; roll
past Lindale to go 24-0
The 12th-ranked Jacksonville
Fightin’ Indians had to work in
one of their games last week,
using their press defense to help
them secure a victory.
In their other game last week,
Jacksonville used that same
press to punish.
Tuesday night, the Indians
held off a pesky Hallsville Bob-
cat squad, 63-56. The Indians
led by four after the first quarter
and at the half, widened the
margin to 14 after three and
withstood a Bobcat charge in
the fourth quarter.
Dadrian “D.D.” Franklin led
Jacksonville with 15 points on
the night. Ozzian Clayborne
added nine and both Charles
Kendrick and Raybon Riden
notched eight. In all, 11 of
Jacksonville’s 14 roster play-
ers scored.
Cody Blankinship led the
Bobcats with 23 points. Nolan
Faires added 22.
The freshman Indians won,
66-20. Datarian Thacker led
Jacksonville with 16 points.
The JVIndians also won, 55-20.
Last Friday, the Indians
opened District 16-4A play
against the Lindale Eagles,
a team that went to the 3A
playoffs last season, but gradu-
ated last year’s leading scorer,
Jordan Van De Kop.
After a first quarter that was
defensively strong and offen-
sively challenged (Jacksonville
led, 9-6, after one), the Indians
turned up their press defense,
forcing 21 steals on their way
to a 49-22 win over the Eagles.
“The effort was there; our
defense was great, but in the
first half, we were getting
the looks we wanted, but we
couldn’t make anything,” said
Indian head coach Brent Kelley.
“At halftime, we said someone
would make that first shot and
that’d give us confidence. D.D.
made a three in the corner and
it allowed us to get going.”
Jacksonville held Lindale
to only six made shots: two
3-pointers and four 2-pointers
— the other eight points came
from free throws.
“We were rotating well (on
the press), and when they did
break it, KD. (Kedarrius Buck-
ingham) took a couple of charges
for us,” Coach Kelley said.
Franklin led Jacksonville
with 11 points. Londedric Tay-
lor added nine, Buckingham
notched eight, Jeremy McA-
nally put in seven and Chris
Cross scored six.
“We don’t have a guy that
scores 15 or 20 a night,” Coach
Kelley said. “Any night, we have
guys that can lead the team and
that’s a good thing. We’re not
depending on one guy where, if
they’re off, we struggle.”
Mason Terry and Jacob Capo
led Lindale with six points each.
Austin Drawbont added four.
“I told the guys that we’ve got
10 games,” Coach Kelley said.
“There’s a lot of good teams in
our district: JTs always strong,
Whitehouse will be there. Na-
cogdoches has a new coach and
they’ve improved.
“Lindale’s well-coached, and
we were better (Friday), butit’ll
be tougher going to theirplace.”
Maidens 0-2 last week
The Jacksonville Fightin’
Maidens dropped two games
last week to teams who, like
them, are expected to fight it
out all season for playoff spots.
Last Tuesday, the Maidens
fell on the road at John Tyler,
43-37. The difference came, at
least in part, in the free throw
disparity - John Tyler went to
the free throw fine 30 times to
Jacksonville’s nine.
Jasmine Parson led the
Fightin’ Maidens with 19
points. Inchantra Kendrick
added eight, while Keevie
Mathis and Sametria “Pooh”
Baker both put in three.
Tiaka Lee and Quaneisha
Johnson each led John Tyler
with 14 points. Tameal Jones
