CHEROKEE CIVIC THEATRE
Cast for ‘Sanders Family Christmas’ announced
By Sheliah O’Heaney
Special Contributor
Cherokee Civic Theatre has an-
nounced the cast of its upcoming
production of “Sanders Family Christ-
mas,” the gospel music comedy sequel
to “Smoke on the Mountain.”
“We are lucky to have most of the
original ‘Smoke’ cast back,” said Jerry
Parker, the show’s director. “Everyone
had such a good time, they had to come
back for Part Two — and they came
back from all over Cherokee...and
a few from beyond the county line.”
Reprising their roles as the “Sanders
Family Singers” are Tiffany Hammock
and Anthony Williams of Jacksonville;
Moira O’Heaney Debbs and Castanya
Breen of Rusk; and David Hendley
of Maydelle. B. Corey Folmnsbee
of Jacksonville returns as the Rev.
Oglethorpe and newcomer Zac Evans
of Bullard takes on the role of Dennis
Sanders.
The original members of the band
are back - Roy Reynolds on piano,
Maxey Wynn on mandolin, Ken Ryan
on bass — and they welcome Reginald
Wise on banjo.
Singing in the amen choir and
chorus are Karen Hendley, Dixie
and Teisha Ellis, Candy Dominguez,
Sheilah O’Heaney, Cheryl Cameron,
Ted Debbs, Jerry Parker and Bran-
don Fincher. Kay Rogers, Camille
Jones and Frances Green play the
disapproving ladies of the church
finance committee. Russell Ellis and
Diki Parker will serve on the show’s
technical crew.
Set on Dec. 10, 1941, “Sanders
Family Christmas” tells not only of
the gospel singing group’s rise in
popularity throughout North Carolina
but also of their worries and fears as
they prepare to send one of their own
into service during World War II. It’s
a humorous and heartwarming tale —
and a great way to start the holiday
season.
Performances of “Sanders Family
Christmas” will be Dec. 6,7,13 and 14
at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee
at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8.
Tickets will go on sale Monday,
Nov. 25 at the CCT Box Office — (903)
683-2131 or online at www.cherokee-
theatre.net.

Who Should
NOT Take
Valproate Products
Valproate is a useful medication designed to treat a numberof conditions
including epilepsy, anorexia and migraines. Migraine prevention drugs
used during pregnancy can cause decreased IQ scores in children born
to mothers who take these medications, according to an FDA alert.
Therefore, FDA issued a drug safety communication that valproate
products are now contraindicated in pregnant women.
The NEAD study showed that children exposed to valproate products
in utero had decreased IQ at aged 6 when compared to children who
were exposed to other antiepileptic drugs. The difference in average
IQ between the children who had been exposed to valproate and the
children who had been exposed to other antiepileptic drugs varied
between 8 and 11 points depending on the antiepileptic drug. It is not
known if there is a certain time period during pregnancy when valproate
exposure can result in decreased IQ. The women in the NEAD study
were exposed to antiepileptic drugs throughout their pregnancies. In
a June 2011 alert, FDA released interim results from the NEAD study
that showed reduced cognitive test scores in these valproate-exposed
children at aged 3, and at that time the drug labels were updated.
