January, French police swooped-
down on leaders of the Union Gen-
erale ties Etudiants Musulmans At
Algeriens i UGEMA >, the National
Union of Algerian Students, an-
nouncing the dissolution of UGEMA
and the arrest of numerous of its
national and local leaders.
The Coordinating Secretariat ol
National Unions of Students was
immediately informed by UGEMA
and the Union Nationale des Etu-
diants de France <UNEFF>, and re-
quested to make inquiries of the
French government and notify im-
mediately all National Unions ol
Students. Accordingly, at once a
able was sent to the French gov-
ernment and a circular on its way
to National Unions. UNEF respond-
ed immediately with a strong pro-
test.
According to UGEMA, the fol-
lowing arrests were made: Ait Clic-
ked. president: Cliail) Taleb, inter
national vice president: Aoufi, presi
dent of the Paris section: the trea-

the officials of the UGEMA Sec-

Aoufi and a number of others
were arrested in* the Cite Univer-
sitaire which has traditionally been
considered a place of sanctuary in
France Aoufi's room was searched
and th<* arrest effected without no-
tification of the University authori-
ties by the police.
The dissolution and wave of ar-
rests follows a series of arrests of
Algerian student leaders. The latest
such incident, the arrest of UGHM \
General Secretary Mohanned Khe-
misti has since been held without
trial or legal advice in a military
prison near Algiers.

Student Editors Exchange
Proposed to Russia by NSA
Exchange of five editors of youth
and Student newspapers has been William S B. Lacy and "Soviet Am-
proposed by the U. S. National bassador Georgi N. Zaroubin. The
tween United States Ambassador
Student Association to the Commit-
tee of Youth Organizations of the
U.S S-R. The Soviet youth group
has said it will respond soon.
Bruce D. Larkin, USNSA inter-
national vice president, said in an-
nouncing the exchange proposal that
it hod arisen from negotiations be-
State Department suggested this
project to USNSA.
Tentatively, the exchange would!
carry United States editors to the
Soviet Union in April lor a month's
visit; the Soviet group would spend
the month of May here.
Larkin indicated that his Associa-
tion’s policy on U SS R, exchange
has favored year long academic ex-
changes as “a more fruitful ap-

range tourist schemes. Claiming
that a shorter program is more ap-
propriate lor student and youth
editors, he pointed out that editors
are accustomed to new situations
and can get to the core ol issues
quickly.
This is USNSA’s first Soviet Ex-
change program in the eleven years
since its founding. Last summer
USNSA conducted a summer student
program in Poland through its edu-
cational travel subsidiary. Larkin
stated that tffe Polish program will
be repeated this summer.
