famíly is a common one, very often
iťs the quality and not the quantity
of time spent togetlier that could stand
improvement. An evening of joint TV-
watching, with all eyes glued to the
screen and conversation limited to
monosyllabies, hardly fosters togetlier-
ness.
Time spent together may be more
enjoyable, and family projeets may in-
crease in frequency, ií you accept fam-
ily members — and your oecassional-
ly negative 1'eelings toward them —
realistically.
Children often make themselves
hard to love. Paren ts, on the otlier
hand, lay down rules thcy do not ob-
serve — and then react with pain
when tliey are imitated instead of
obeyed. Recognizing such common sour
ces of friction can give you a head
start toward overcoming íhem.
& <ř
Face up!ía whaťs bothering you. Guilt
feelings are universal; everyone who
has a conscience is sorry for some-
tliing he has doně or left undone. Re-
pressed guilt wreaked havoc thousands
of years before Freud described its un-
healthy eonsequences: “When I de~
clared not my sin,” said King David,
“my body wasted away through my
groaning all day long.” (Psalm 32.3,
RSV).
The first step, as both psychologists
and clergymen will telí you, is to bring
these uncomfortable feelings out info
the open. Admit to yourself, even if to
no one else, that you háve fallen pain-
fulíy short of b,eing the person yoiťd
like to be — then, seek a solution.
None of these resolutions is easy. But
if you tackle even one or two of them,
you may find each year a “Happier
New Year” than the one that went be-
fore.
