NEWS / ANNOUNCEMENTS
AI Coming
to SU
Kristen Davis
Imagine being awakened in the
middle of the night by a group of
gun-toting soldiers and thrown in
jail without a hearing or a trial.
You have done nothing wrong, and
no one is willing or able to tell
you why you have been brought to
this filthy prison. You are kept
here indefinitely with no word
from your family or anyone you
know. You may or may not be
tortured, depending on the severity
of your "crime" and the mood and
disposition of your captors. You
do not know if you will e^er sec
your loved ones again, if you will
walk in the sunlight once more, if
you will live or die.
It sounds impossible, but this
happens to innocent people every
day. Amnesty International is a
non-political, not-for-profit
organization that works to stop
things such as these from
happening. Our goal is to free
prisoners of consciences, people
who are imprisoned because of
their race, ethnicity, political
beliefs, national origin, or
religion. We also seek to end the
practices of torture and the
systematic use of the death penalty
in prisons, of detaining prisoners
without trial or charge, and of
holding children as political
prisoners. This is not an easy
task, as every government on the
globe engages in the abuse of
prisoners in some way.
Southwestern University docs
not have a chapter of Amnesty
International yet, but we will
soon, and we urge everyone
interested to join. The next
Human Rights Committee
meeting will be on Thursday, Nov.
9 at 12:00 in the Upstairs
Commons in which we will be
discussing the creation of AI here
on campus. As a member of the
SU chapter of AI, you would be
asked to pay a small fee each
semester and to write letters to
foreign heads of state urging them
to free prisoners of conscience. If
you are interested, or if you would
like more information, please
contact James Rodriguez (xll05,
box 6393), Tom Mahaffey (xl105,
box 6710) or Kristen Davis
(xlll9, box 6492). Or if you
would like to get in touch yvith AI
yourself, the address is:

Take NATS
The N.A.T.S. (National
Association of Teachers of
Singing) annual convention was
held in Denton, Texas this year at
the University of North Texas.
This regional voice competition is
for voice students of members in
Texas, New Mexico - and
Oklahoma, and is judged by some
of the most prestigious voice
teachers in the nation. The
competition is offered to high
school students, and all
classifications of undergraduate and
graduate students. This year, seven
voice students from the studios of
Virginia Dupuy and Nancy
McClain travelled to represent
Southwestern. They were:
Freshmen Rob Phillips, Stephen
Mendenhall and Michelle
Weselman; Sophomore Tanya
Bleke; Juniors Maryanne Navickas
and Susan Busch; and Senior Anne
Meadows. Mendenhall advanced lo
semifinals in the freshman men
division. Meadows and Navickas
managed to advance to finals
(which has not been achieved by
any SU student in several decades)
in the junior and senior women’s
division. Maryanne Navickas
pulled a fourth place in junior
women overall within the tri-state
area and Anne Meadows placed
second overall in senior women.
According to Kenny Sheppard,
head of SU's voice dept., within
his sixteen years of teaching at
Southwestern, no student has ever
reached that stature in the upper
levels. The voice faculty, needless
to say, is delighted. Our thanks to
Cathy Degnan and Jerric Brccs for
accompanying them.
