Southwestern Authors
to be Honored April 26
History, economics, sociology
and psychology are among the
topics of books by more than a
dozen Southwestern University
faculty and staff who will be
honored at an author’s party from
4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in
the Main Lounge of Bishops
Memorial Union.
Organized by Southwestern
Bookstore owners Larry and
Susan Connell, the event is
designed to acknowledge the
publishing accomplishments of
the faculty and staff. "Writing a
book is very hard work," said
Susan Connell, "and we wanted
to honor the people who have
gotten published." The event is
open to the public and attendees
will have an ' opportunity to
interact with the authors.
"I am so pleased with the
number of faculty authors be-
cause it demonstrates the fac-
ulty’s commitment to profes-
sional scholarly activities as well
as their commitment to the
educational mission of providing
a quality undergraduate education
here at Southwestern, "said
Benjamin G. Oliver, Dean of the
Brown College of Arts and Sci-
ences.
Southwestern’s author’s have
published on a wide variety of
subjects:
Dr. Douglas Hooker, Chair of
the Department of Psychology,
will be on hand to discuss his
book The Healthy Personality
and the Christian Life. Although
he uses the work as .a textbook,
Hooker says the book also has
general interest appeal for readers
who are interested in exploring
the sometimes "uncomfortable"
challenge of Christian faith, love
and hope. Based on the theology
of Karl Bart, the book, Hooker
says, has been of more interest to.
psychologists than professors of
religion.
J. Frank Dobie’s literarv be-
ginnings are chronicled in Dr. Jud
Custer’s book Dobie at
Southwestern University. The
renowned Western historian at-
tended Southwestern from 1906-
1911 and published his first es-
says, folklore and Western stories
while in college, according to
Custer, Professor of Education at
Southwestern. "The book
provides a compilation of his
early works and insight into his
personality," Custer said.
Two Southwestern faculty
members are represented in
Ambiguous Realities: Women in
the Middle Ages and
Renaissance. Associate Dean of
the Brown College of Arts and
Sciences, Dr. Jeanie Watson, co-
edited the book which includes
one of her articles and and an
article by Assistant Professor of
English Dr. Deborah S. Ellis.
