What’s the Reunion offer? ‘Everything!’
BY STEVE NASH
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Steve, nash @ brownwoodbu lletin.com
“Is there anything of interest to those of us
who aren’t from Brownwood?”
Merisha Parvis, one of the organizers of this
weekend’s Brownwood Reunion Celebration
and competition chair, had no trouble an-
swering that question from a Facebook post.
“Everything!” Parvis exclaimed upon learn-
ing of the post.
The carnival opened Thursday night, ahead
of key attractions that are open from 5-8 p.m.
Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon
to 5 p.m. Sunday. Events include a barbecue
cookoff, Brownwood’s Got Talent, 5K/10K
Run, magic show and car show.
Preparations were going great, the bands
for the concerts were arriving and all of the
vendor space was taken, Parvis said Thursday
afternoon. Forty-two barbecue teams had
signed up for the barbecue cook-off. “It’s go-
ing to be bigger than we’ve ever had,” Parvis
said of this year’s celebration.
So what else does the Reunion offer to
longtime Brownwood residents and newcom-
ers alike?
“There’s a parade — the grand parade and
children’s Honor a Hero parade ... numerous
vendors and food booths ... arts and crafts
... a children’s area with bounce houses and
petting zoos,” Parvis said.
“If you’re an athlete or even if you’re not,
there’s the 5K-10K run/walk. You could come
out and judge barbecue yourself on Satur-
day. We pull judges from the crowd so all
you have to do is show up. They have a rock
climbing wall.
“If you’ve never been to one, there’s some-
thing to keep you busy all weekend long. It’s
lots of fun. It’s a blast. The whole community
can come. There’s something for everyone.”
Everclear, the certified-platinum sell-
ing band that rose to fame in the '90s, will
headline Celebration Stage Friday. Cory Mor-
row, Texas country singer and songwriter,
has been named the headliner for Saturday.
Closing out this year’s Brownwood Reunion
on Sunday will be Brownwood native Van
Wilks, an electric and acoustic guitarist who
was named Best Electric Guitarist and Best
Acoustic Guitarist at the annual SXSW Music
Awards in Austin.

Time is winding down for
residents to go online and vote for
their favorite contestants in the
Brownwood’s Got Talent competi-
tion held in conjunction with the
Brownwood Reunion Celebration.
“These guys and gals are ab-
solutely amazing,” said Tammy
Robinson. “The 14-year-old will give
you goose bumps!”
While most of the talents involve
singing, Robinson notes one is a
slam poet. The 12 contestants were
selected on Aug. 17 after a full day
of auditions and they recorded a
performance the next day to be
used in the online voting.
The finalists will perform from
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday next to
the barbecue cookoff area. Finalists
include Heather Green, Jaden Mat-
thews, Karsen McCarter, Michael
McFetridge, Moriah McNeely,
Katherine Palmer, Kaloh Rose, Cody
Sellers, Zakary Webb, Aaron Tassin,
Jayslin King and Kellee Greenwood.
“WTe encourage everyone to come
by and watch the amazing talent
we have,” Robinson said. “From a
social worker to an office manager
to Howard Payne students, they are

RAINY START
MICAH MOORE | BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
The midway, normally a bustling area during Reunion weekend, was unusually quiet during Thursday’s
opening night as heavy rains dampened many outdoor activities. The forecast calls for a 70 percent
chance of rain today, but just a 10 percent chance the rest of the weekend.

Kidnapping report
leads to two,
including accuser
BY STEVE NASH
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Steve, nash @ brownwoodbu lletin.com
A report of a kidnapping
led to the arrests of two
people including the man
who reported the kidnap-
ping.
Johnathan Tsuchiya, a
27-year-old Euless man,
called Brady police to
report he was being kid-
napped. But it was Tsuchi-
ya who went to jail on an
charge of making a false
report. The man Tsuchiya
claimed was kidnapping
him — Juan Avila, 42, of
Arlington — also went to
jail on a charge of interfer-
ing with an emergency call
and on a federal warrant
for distribution of meth-
amphetamine.
The odd event began
around 1:45 a.m., when
Brady police received a call
from a man claiming he
had been kidnapped, dep-
uty Byron Langley’s report
states. The man said he
was in a grey minivan on
U.S. Highway 377 and also
said the driver claimed to
