The President alao said,
“...inflation hits farmers in two
ways. It drives up both the cost

living. The rate of inflation in
the first quarter oi l»n was the
lowest in four years, only one-
half of what it wae in 1970. We
are working very hard to ease
this perennially troublesome
cost-price squares ”
And I agree with the
president's statement that “in
the final analysis the problems
of American agriculture can
best be solved by thoee who
know faming beat, the farm
people themeeivea, with
government backup when
neceeeary” Mr. Drachenberg
said “I gueaa that's why we
both have high hopes for
the new bl-partisan farm
programs which are in effect
this year.

Committee said this week.
President Nixon launched
the salute with a nationwide
radto addrese calling on all
Americans to join him in a bi-
partisan tribute to the farmers
of this country.
“I have high hope* for the
new farm programs which are
in effect this year," the
preaident told the Nation.
"They remove some of the eld
reeti aints in a way which gtvas

more of his own decisions
about the kind of farming that
suits him best.” Mr.
Drachenberv*. spotlighted other
major goals which can help
fanners improve their income
stated in the President’s ad-
dress:
—Increase agricultural
exports from the 17.4 billion
this year to an annua) fie
billion figure.
-Continue the battle against
inflation.
—Increase the level of
operating loans insured by the
Farmers Home Ad-
ministration.
—Support applied research
for controlling agricultural
peats.
—Increase grants for small
watershed projects.
-Increase funding for
technical assistance on con-
servation projects.
—Increase funds for insured
loans for water and sewer
systems in rural areas.
-Work with farm
organizations and the Congress
on such problems as farm
labor, and farm bargaining
legislation
In a special tribute at the
White mure, Mr, Drachenberg
said, the president climaxed a
day of recognition by cabinet
members and other high

reception and dinner for

The President said, "Tharttai
to American agriculture for
making us the best fed, the beet

thanks to American
agriculture for providing the
bask, industry that is essential
for any nation to be strong.”
Calling attention to the
productivity of American
Agriculture, the President
noted that in the last iw years
American industry ha* in-
creased its productivity per
man-hour by 150 percent , a
great achievement. But in that
same period agriculture has
increased its productivity per

twice a* much.
“I was particularly pleated
to see the Preaidant discus*
farm income and inflation,”
Drachenberg said. “The
Preeident pointed pointed out
that in a free society whoever

compensated for more. Then

Lynn Futch, Stole Director of
the Farmers Home Ad-

Futch pointed out that an
additional *12,800.000.00 has
been released for the current
fiscal year, through June 30,
for rural water and sewer
system loans in Texas. He
emphasized the need for

end sewer system loan* to
move quickly. The State Office
of Farmer* Home Ad-
ministration must have
completed loan applications
for review and approval before
June 15. 1971. Mr. Futch also
said that more money would be
available for the new fiscal
year of 1972 than was avail-
able in this present fiscal year
of 1971, . , .
Jerry Johnson of
Nacogdoches, President of the
Texas Association of Rural
Water Corporations, urged
existing systems to take ad-
vantage of the current supply
of loan money. “Many systems
that have been operating for
several years now need ad-
ditional loan money to provide
new consumer service and now
is tiie time to hike advantage of
the $18.6 million allocation for
our state," commented
Johnson.
Rural residents desiring
additional information con-
