THE PUBLIC FORUM
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
(or rantblings of a stressed-out
director of a community action
agency)
Dear Editor,
HeadStarl for Rains County is
almost a reality now! For a lime
I was almost positive I would
never be able to make that state-
ment. The building is completed,
(he outside additions arc under-
way, teachers and aides arc
hired, and the first official meet-
ing of the NETO HeadStart
Policy Council has been con-
ducted. The Texas Department of
Protective and Regulatory Ser-
vices will come July 31 for
inspection and with any luck -
and lots of hard work - a daycare
license will be awarded to us. We
plan to open the building and
start classes the same day as
Rains ISD, August 21. We are
finally getting to the fun part -
landscaping, canopies, signs
(gorgeous signs by SportsGraph-
ics in Emory) and setting the
flagpole.
I have been taught since child-
hood to give flowers to those
who deserve them while They arc
still here, so I would like to take
the opportunity to express my
appreciation to some folks who
have worked with us to help us
gel this program ready. Without
community support, the task of
putting this program into opera-
tion would be impossible.
I appreciate Superintendent
Scago and his staff al the school
for their assistance and coopera-
tion. Mr. Seago did me a huge
favor one hot Friday by getting
me in touch with Michael
Stanley. Michael helped me load
and move four pickup loads of
large boxes and debris from
inside and around the new build-
ing. Taking into consideration
my age and physical stamina,
you can accurately conclude that
Michael had a lot of work to do,
and we appreciate Michael!
The Emory Volunteer Fire De-
partment came out and did a con-
trolled burning of the debris as
soon as I made the request. That
probably saved the county some
further destruction since I can
barely burn leaves without incur-
ing a catastrophe.
Commissioner Gary Bishop
answered an SOS promptly and
came out himself to shred around
the building so construction
could begin on the fence for the
playground and the handicapped
ramps. You arc appreciated Garv
Mike.
Avis Jones and the Road and
Bridge Department did an excel-
lent job on the building pad.
driveway, and parking lot. Avis,
Eddie Bums and Jerry Marney
came last Friday on their day off
to help get the new appliances
uncrated, moved inside, and
placed in the kitchen. Of course.
we realized pretty quickly that
Mamey came to brag a little
since he was carrying around (he
large fish he had just pulled in
from the lake in his car.
Connie Mills in (he judge’s
office is just great. She helps me
locate names, numbers, and
steers me in the right direction
every time I get in a jam. She
even lets me sit a minute and
complain. Tliat is worth a lot.
A sincere appreciation to Miss
Bonnie for the wonderful article
she wrote about NETO. I am
proud to state that we have had
several calls from citizens since
the article was released. We
appreciate every opportunity to
get the message out that we are
here and ready to assist. I was a
little disappointed that she didn’t
ask me for a recipe though. I had
my favorite one for “How to Boil
Water” already typed out
If you haven't driven by to see

July. The trash drop-off and
recycling center will be open

but closed from noon until 1:00
p.m. It is located on the service
road To Highway 69 (Locust

ton pickup loaded bed-level-full

freon or liquid paint.
A couple of weeks ago when
telling you about the jerk of the
month. I described some theater
seats he had dumped on the side
of the road and mentioned that
they were nice. Before we could
get out and pick them up, some-
one carried them off for us. I
guess That proves Thai it’s worth-
while To advertise in this newspa-
per.
I am often asked if a person
who reports an illegal dumper
will have to testify in court. To
answer that question, I could fall
hack on my legal training and
say, “it depends.” But since I’m
not practicing law, I will give an
answer that actually means
something. If you report the inci-
dent to me i can almost always
make a case on my testimony
alone. In fact, when I tell the
judge what happened and watch
the jerk’s expression, to borrow
an old movie line, “It makes my
day.”
Next week I will discuss
something else you can do.
