TUESDAY. JULY 22.2003
ELM NEWS
by Mary Bishop
Writing this column has kept
me from being overly confident.
Over the years I have recounted
many funny, touching and im-
portant interactions. I have
received heart-warming letters
from all over the U.S.A. Mar-
shall Bishop often said I should
pay people for allowing me to
help them because I have such a
good time. Writing has made it
clear that what is gospel one year
can be thrown out the next.
When I get a disappointing letter,
it forces me to reexamine what I
say. The Leader is compulsive
about fact checking, and I'm
glad. I shudder to think what I
wrote about ear infections years
ago. Today, recommendations
are completely different.
When I took a job a Rains
School last year, I knew I would
be helping children and making a
difference in their lives. I never
knew what a difference (hey
would make in mine. I have
learned perspective humility and
how to laugh from my encoun-
ters with the kids. I thought writ-
ing for the Leader would give me
gratification, but I didn't know
how much I would enjoy it.
Rick and Hilda went to Texas
A&M Saturday to a firemen’s
meeting. They worked at home
all week. This was (heir vacation.

Marie Riggins are all feeling
some better.
Ricky and James Ratliff have
been busy baling hay. Iva Nell
Ratliff's yard really looks nice
with lots of flowers. Irma Spinks
watered the flowers at Elm
Church, and I watered the grass.
Marie Riggins will mow next
weekend. They got things closed
out. They were running way
behind at the office, so it de-
tained her two weeks.
The raccoons came at noon to
eat at Leon’s Saturday, and about
six come each night to eat cal
food. Leon feeds all the animals
and cows all year long. The
cows got cake Saturday, too.
Bertie Young gave me two
pant sets for my birthday. One is
purple and one medium blue, and
they just fit and are very pretty.
Thanks a lot, Bertie. I hope I re-
member her birthday in Octem-
bcr. They are planning a big
party for her in Yantis.
I wrote Lyndon Bishop a letter
Saturday. He lives in East Haven,
Conn. I had mailed three pack-
ages earlier of things he forgot.
Bertie Young and Leon Asbill
ate lunch with me Sunday. It
really helped pass the day for us
all.
Alton Asbill was getting their
mail as I passed by, and they said
they were all right. I gave them
two eggplants.
Rev. Robert Spann preached a
good sermon Sunday, and Nina
sang a beautiful song.
Cathy Jo Henderson and her
mother, Magdalene Henderson,
were at Elm Church Sunday, also
Kristal Nacole, Wade and Na-
tasha. We were happy to sec
them. It was nice to have Arvis
Asbill and Marie Riggins at
church Sunday, too.
Kate Bruce will have a birth-
day Tuesday. I hope she has a
very special day and lots more
birthdays.
Wish each of you a great
week.
Terri Baker was a visitor in (he
office last week to renew her
subscription to the Rains County
Leader.
