KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR
' Alvin Friedrich is another
Bartlett (business man who grew
up on the farm in this commun-
ity and remained to make Bart-
lett his home and place of busi-
ness. Since 19135 he has operated
the Friedrich Grain Company
and has had a variety of inter-
ests in connection with this
business and with farm opera-
tions which he has continued.
IIo likes farming and has ar-
ranged his business interests so
that thoy coincide with the
needs of the farmers of the com-
munity. During the planting and
harvesting season when he is
supervising work on his own
farm and operating his business
he is a busy man ibut never too
busy to discuss planting prob-
lems fertilizers livestock and
poultry remedies and cotton
poisons with farmers who have
problems of their own.
Alvin was born on the farm
in the Kelso community the son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Friedrich
who still farm in that commun-
ity. For about ten years they
lived north of the Lutheran
Church but returned to the
Kelso community. They came to
Bartlett from Austin County.
There were six children in the
family. Two brothers Leslie of
Bishop and Herbert of Holland
and two sisters Mrs. B. H.
Muehlhause and Mrs. Edward
E. Kunz of Bartlett are still liv-
ing. Another brother died when
a young iboy.
Alvin attended school at Kelso
and at Holland and after school
days farmed with his father
until the spring of 1928 when he
planted the first crop for him-
self. It was on June 28 1928
that he and Anna Muehlhause
were married. Her parents are
Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Muehlhause
and her gi'andparents were
among the early settlers of the
Bartlett community. They also
came to Bartlett from Austin
County.
Mrs. Friedrich who has been
active in the business with her
husband for a number of years
attended school at the German-
English School and has contin-
ued her education through cor-
respondence work.
Their daughter Joan was
born the same year the business
was started in town and shet is
now a sophmore in Bartlett High
School.
During its first year the
Friedrich Grain Company was
located in the building now oc-
cupied by Heel Jewelry. A corn
sheller was also operated that
year and the principal business
was buying and shipping grain.
Field seed were sold and a line
of Red Chain feeds was carried.
The business was moved to its
present location in January 1936
u jhl '&
and its operations expanded to
include a full line of feeds seed
livestock and poultry remedies
fertilisers poisons and paints.
Buying and shipping corn and
small grain continued to oe a
major part of the business and
still is. In 19jS7 Alvin built the
sheller plant which is. now a part
of the Moore Gram Co. He sold
it to the C. F. Hill Grain Co. and
Hill sold later to Moore.
Farm operations have contin-
ued right along with the busi-
ness. On the farm in addition
to the usual operations ho raises
pedigree Romberg Hybrid seed
corn and his own certified maize
hegari and quadroon. On the
farm is also a seed drying and
cleaning plant.
He (built the Bartlett Food
Locker in 1944 and haa owned
and operated it since. For sev-
eral years he also operated the
Holland Food Locker in Holland.
His hobby is pigeons. He
raises homing pigeons White
Kings Red Carneaus and some
times other varieties. Mrs.
Friedrich's hobbies are flowers
and painting. Although she has
never studied art she has paint-
ed a number of pictures. The
large scenes displayed at the St.
John Lutheran Church at Christ
mas and Lent are her work.
Alvin is a member of the
Chamber of Commerce the
Luncheon Club the Bell County
Farm Bureau the American
Pigeon Association and the
American Seedman's Associa-
tion. He is a church councilman
at 'St. John Lutheran Church and
