with 13, followed by 12 from Chase
Philipp, 10 by Taylor Strickland, nine

Cubs Finish Pre-District
Action With Win, Loss
CLIFTON—The varsity Cubs fin
ished non-district action with a 12-9
record following a win last Saturday
over West and a loss Monday to
Gatesville. Clifton took a 50-40 win
over the TVojans in a game played at
Clifton High School last Saturday
afternoon.
“Eric Keeton hit a shot at the
buzzer to end the second quarter,
which gave us momentum going into
the second half,” said Boys’ Head
Basketball Coach Brady Gage. “We
broke the game open when West
went man-to-man in the fourth, and
Keeton hit Matthew Yates on an al-
ley-oop which started a series of
plays where we were able to come
away with points on five straight trips
down the floor.”
Yates led the Cubs in points (13),
and pulled down eight rebounds. Ben
Stenmark had a double-double (10
points, 11 rebounds), and Keeton
scored in double figures (11), add-
ing three assists and three steals.
Yates and Stenmark led in blocked
shots with a pair each.
"I hope this was our last ‘off’ game
since we enter district on Friday in
Breckenridge,” said Coach Gage.
“We looked like we were just out there
and that our hearts were not in it.”
Yates poured in 19 points, far lead-
ing the Cub scoring attack. Sten-
mark was second-high point man
with nine.
Yates also led in rebounds with
nine, and blocked shots with four.
Yates and Stenmark led in assists
with three each, while Keeton, Sten-
mark, and Clay Cox had two assists
apiece.
“The third quarter did us in by our
own admission. We gave them 15
points off turnovers in just the third
quarter, and did not produce any of-
fense until late in the quarter.

Cub JV Keeps On Winning
“I felt the real difference in the
game was allowing West just four of-
fensive rebounds,” Gage explained.
The Cubs hosted the Gatesville
Hornets Monday, falling 61-42, to fin-
ish the pre-district stretch of games.
“Yates had a gutsy performance
in the fourth. He wanted the ball, and
there was no stopping him,” said
Gage.
Despite the 19-point loss, Gage is
hopeful for the immediate future of
his varsity Cubs.
“I know we can make the playoffs
if we just get focused and execute
like we have been,” he said.
Clifton travels to Breckenridge
Friday night to open District 7-3A
play against the Buckaroos. Game
time is set for 8 p.m.
the Trojan JV.
The Cub JV came back Monday
to take a 63-44 win over the Gates-
ville Hornet JV
“Philipp was hot from the three-
point line with four. Philipp, Ratliff,
and Canuteson were perfect at the
free-throw line,” Coach Fields re-
marked.
Philipp was high scorer for Clifton
with 16, followed by 11 from Strick-
land, eight by Moore and Dietiker,
six from Ratliff and Canuteson, four
by Corral, and two from Stenmark
and Ryan Olson.
Dietiker was tops in assists with
six, while Strickland led in steals with
seven. Moore had two blocked shots
and Canuteson had one. Moore
grabbed 11 rebounds, Dietiker had
seven, and Philipp, Strickland, and
Stenmark had five apiece.
“We are 14-2 going into district. We
have 10 games left, but they are the
ones that count. It should be a good
run for the district title,” Coach
Fields concluded.

man. “We plan to have more sausage and brisket available this year, so
hopefully everyone will be able to be served ”
“The original idea for the fund-raiser came from the slogan we use,” said
the board member The sale bills its purpose as “because you’ve got better
things to do than cook on Super Bowl Sunday ”
“Our barbecued and smoked meats will be served hot, fresh, and deli-
cious." the board member promises. Offered for sale by the pound will be
