Sports/Recreation Injuries More Prevalent Than Car Crash Injuries
ATLANTA — Participating in sports and rec-
reational activities can have important health
benefits, but participants need to be aware of
the risk of being injured. Injuries related to
sports and recreation occur across all seg-
ments of the population and send people to
hospital emergency departments more fre-
quently than motor vehicle-related injuries,
according to figures released by the Center for
Disease Control and Prevention’s National
Center for Injury Control and Prevention in
Atlanta, Ga.
From July 2000 through June 2001, U.S. hospi-
tal emergency departments treated 4.3 million
persons (one out of every 65 persons) with
sports and recreation-related injuries. CDC
Injury researchers remind participants to take
appropriate safety measures, such as training,
conditioning, wearing protective gear, and us-
ing safe and reliable equipment, to avoid sports
and recreational injuries.
