twenty-four companies cavalry artillery

of the companies bad no: their rank3 full

1800 men oa parade. -

co'rrespoayence the following detailed and
interesting account of the fight at Fairfax
Court House Va. on the 1st inst. between
Company B.( U. S. Dragoons 80 men Intclysi
from Texas and a body of irginia troops
and Capt. John L. JIarr's Warrenton Rifles
SI men. The correspoudent says:
A few days since this litllo corps armed
with a very ordinary rifle without bayonets
were ordered to march to Fairfax Courthouse
at tftat place they found Capt. John Shack
Green's Rappahannock Cavalry and Captain
Thornton's Prince William Horse. The Rap-
pahaoneck troop3-were armed only with Ibe
old sword without pistols while tho Prince
V1ll1am troops bad swords und pistolsfthe lat-
ter of the mosumproved kind.
This morning the enemy captured our rifle
picket and at icn minutes past three came
into town. Rumor has it ttfat tho cavalry re-
treated in haste as they had no carbines to re
sist the enemy who numbered nearly 100 and
besides pistols were likewise armed with
Sharp's rifles. I do cot believe that the caval-
ry did run. Right into the vilUgo the party
dashed where the Rifles were drawn up to re-
stive them in open order of battle. When
fithio less Iban 80 yards the noble-hearted
Uarr gave orders lorihe front rank to fire and
thirty seven rifles iired as if from one gun
omptjiDg six or. teveu saddles. Thedragoons
accustomed to Indian fighting at once picked
iip their detd and wounded comrades and re-
treated atlndicn A second charge was made
jvitb no better success and then a third when
die U. S troops fled. They earned ofT all their
lead and wounded but my informant told us
hat an old gentleman who was on his way to
the Cjurt iftuse from Fall's Church met the
enemy and himself counted fonr dead men in
the single squad he met. On asking if they
bad not had a severe fight they responded in
the affirmative remarking also that they had
laid downlbeir l'ves in delenco of this glorious
Unton. Kinepruonprs were taken by our men
and from what I could get from the members
of the company who brought with them here
tho body of tho brave Marr not less than from
ten to twenty were killed and more than that
number wounded but the dragoons imitating
the Indu.n example in Tcias carried off all
the dead and wounded. Capt. ilarr was not
seen after the first fire and he doubtless fell-at
that time. When found n bullet had pierced
his heart.
