have bo positive knowledge he to which of
the two railroads the Gri-rcoton or the
Houston Central k isoet to Mane for the
"want of eoH&eefcioa at Hftttetan by which
all the "New Orleans and Galveston mails
are delayed in Houston trem o&c to tojp
days. All we have said and all wc can
now Bay is that tUie wilfel break in the
connection aed the coiieeqrBi detention in
Houston of all tke most ieperWtat mails for
the whole country together with passen-
gers and freight is the moil gross and out-
rageous imposition anywhere to be met
with and such as would net be submitted to
by the people of any otter State. We have
been told that the Galveston Railroad Co.
have often endeavored to make tho connec-
tion with the Central as it Is obviously
-their interest; but that when tho time of
departure here has been regulated for that
purpose the time of the Houston Central
has-bceu clia-sged so as again to break the
connection in order thereby to compel the
detention of passengers in Houston and to
force them -vrhctLeosalug down to take the
steamers. What nay bo the motive we know
not; wo only state what we have been told.
But it matters little to us or to tho public
'whose fault it is or whose rival Interests
'are thus attempted to be promoted at the
public expense. The fact that we together
with the great body of the people of Texas
should be made to suffer to such an extent
on account of this petty rivalry between
cities and railroads companies is what we
complain of.
The Telegraph prudently rvoids any at
tempt to justify this outrageous detention 1
of mails and passengers in Heasura ;uU
adroitly-cvadcs that question and under-
takes to say that if we only bad the enter-
prise of the editor of that paper our sub-
scribers would hare less cause to complain.
The editor of the Telegraph lells us that in
order to get his paper off promptly by every
mail he assorts bis own mail putting it
into the several bogs and labeling each for
its proper destination etc. and thus does
much of the work belongiug'to the Post
master. If the Telegraph man will inquire
at this PQstofHec he will be informed that
we have 4one all this work for many years
past and wc never thought of claiming any
especial credit for it. The business of our
office js 60 systcmatised that it is just about
as easy for us to separate our mail as to
send it to our postoffice for separation. But
wc would be glad to learn from our friend
of the Telegraph what difference it can make
in the dispatch of our mail "whether it is
separated by ourselves or by the Postmas-
ter so it is done in time to leave here by
the first mail departure. Boss he think he
can make our subscribers and his own be-
lieve that it is his own superior enterprise
andnotthis wilful detention of our mail in
Houston that enables him to give the news
in advance of tjs ? He knows perfectly well
that the mail with his paper leaves Hous-
ton At 8 a.m. near three hours before the
mail from this city with our paper can get
there : and that our mail has to remain in
Houston two days until the next train
leaves on the Central road. Now will the
Telegraph inform us how by his superior
enterprise we could get our paper iu Hous-
ton three hours sooner so tha it may leave
Houston by the .8 a. jr. train !
As wc said before we have attempted to
accomplish this end by sending our Veekly
issue published on Tuesday by the steam-

business men having a due regard to their
pecuniary interests tbey may bave looked fur-

to the favorable action of the municipal au-

this alone: The city owns the Bridge which
has cost her 120000. Will she permit the

The ptoclt market generally was Inactive
and dull today but American snares were
a conspicuous exception. They were buoyr
ant irom the beginninrj to the end of the
session and 4eHnes tvere pry heavy al-
though the buying was not by the public
but by professional traders here and oa
American and Berlin ordcr3.
Brian is hardly mentioned here. The
TJCttinir at Lloyds is at odds oi 8 to 1 on

preparing for very heavy business on Wed-
nesday. The Btock excwuico will be oiwn
at 330 Instead of U o'clOCK. Conslflerable
realStion Is expected from those who
bought Borne time ago and now hare large
profits but on the other hand many are
talking -or buying- more when the .result is
known positively. .
Money was In demand here this raomlns

the election coupled" with Ore smallness of
demand has caused temporary stagnation
but there Is a nrm belief that by the end
of tbe week there will be a decided differ

progress will b pushed to completion. No
Armouncements of further plans .however
will be made for two or three days. The
