Historian Leo
Millard has own
interesting history

Leo Millard has always been had suggested. He says his been a USDA trained poultry
interested in Delta County boss told him to look him up inspector.
Leo Millard shares his history and the history of Delta County. Millard is the person many
Delta County residents turn to when looking for the history of Delta County
and it’s rich history. He serves
on the Board of Directors for
the Patterson Memorial Delta
County Museum and he says
that he “has always been
interested in history and it
just came natural to me when
I saw that the county had a
need.” He was also involved
in the group, Bricks on the
Square, which redid the brick
work that surrounds Cooper’s
downtown square.
He is the only member
of his family that was born
in Texas, the rest were born
in Yell County Arkansas. Leo
turns 85 on Monday, May
7th and when asked if he had
lived his whole life in Delta
County, he answered, “Not
yet!”. That is just a sample of
Leo’s charming wit. Anyone
who has visited his shop,
Leo’s Lair, on Dallas Avenue
knows that Leo has never met
a stranger.
He wifi be married to his
wife, Dorothy, for 62 years in
November. They have four
children, nine grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Two of his four children have
preceded him in death and
he said that “is something
you never get over, how can
you?”. He speaks fondly of
his wife saying that “she has
stuck with me in the thick and
thin, and there has been a lot
of thin”.
He went to school in
Antioch up to the tenth
grade and then he went to
Cooper High School and
got his diploma in 1939. He
had designs on becoming an
architect and attended the
University of Texas for short
time until he found out that
he was not cut out to be an
architect. In 1942, he says the
after the war and he would
have ajob. He had other plans
though as that job required a
lot of moving around and he
did not want to move a family
around.
Leo served in the Navy
and worked in the shipyards
as a metal smith, pipe fitter
and sheet metal worker. He
served “three years, three
months, two weeks and a
day and a half’ in the navy
and then later joined the
reserves in the organized
surface division. Leo lost his
hearing in one ear while he
was in the navy. A cannon
was fired four feet above his
head on board ship that was
being fitted at the shipyard.
Then, much later after hip
surgery, he lost the hearing in
his “good” ear and is left with
partial hearing in his ear that
was damaged while he was in
the navy. He said “I am not
Leo has a history of
finding properties that are
eyesores and restoring them.
He restored the home that he
and his wife live in. It took he
and his wife a period of six and
a half years to complete but
even today, they still are very
pleased with the results. He
did not stop with one house,
he also restored another one
on the street that he lives on.
He also renovated the building
that houses Leo’s Lair. He
said that when he bought that
property, it had big holes in
the walls and he had to repair
the roof. Creating this shop
came natural to him as he
says he “has a lot of stuff, I
am a packrat.” His wife and
daughter added dishes and
glassware and they help by
seeking out merchandise to
offer to their customers. Stop
by and check his shop out and
see his handiwork.
