GRADUATION
From page A-1
parents, teachers, or who-
ever else has shaped you to
be the person you are today,
we thank you. A thank you
for keeping us on the right
path and pushing us - okay,
shoving us - to do what we
needed to get done, and now
we’ve finally done it."
He closed by saying. "Just
remember, those people who
guided you on your path to
graduation don't want to
see you fall short of your
dreams. Remember all the
memories we've made on
our journey to this point...
and remember to handle our
independence and freedom
w ith responsibility."
Silvia Chavez, valedicto-
rian, opened her speech in
Spanish, noting that she is
proud of her Hispanic heri-
tage. "For me. this event is
part of my living the Ameri-
can dream. Who could have
imagined one day that I, a
first generation American of
Mexican immigrants, now
naturalized citizens, could
have such a special honor as
the one we are experiencing
this evening?"
“Today is a day when a
significant chapter in our
lives ends and a new one
begins. On behalf of all the
graduates, I would like to
extend our sincerest thanks
to our parents or caregivers
who not only dealt with our
dirty diapers and hysterical
crying when we were young,
but also have dealt with our
teenaged hormones for the
past few years.”
Quoting Stephen Am-
brose. she said, “The past
is a source of knowledge,
and the future is a source of
hope. Love of the past im-
plies faith in the future.”
Speaking of the years at
Clifton, Chavez then said,
"We go with a common
background: our life and
education in Clifton. We
all have the potential to
make significant contribu-
tions and to be leaders in the
world. Our community and
our school have provided us
the foundation for success.
It is now up to us to use that
foundation as we move for-
ward with our lives.”
“Graduates, it is with
great affection and a mix-
ture of excitement and some
degree of sadness that we
bid farewell to CHS. I wish
us all the very best in the fu-
ture. Congratulations, Class
of 2011 - believe it or not
we made it,” said Chavez in
closing.
Bergman then introduced
the 25 honor graduates, as
well as those graduates who
have enlisted in the military
service. The honor graduates
(alphabetically) included:
Sarah Bekken, Jessica Bev-
erly, Stephen Boyle, Silvia
Chavez, Chelsea Erickson,

lyn (Abby) Harris, Chelsea

arships from city and com-
munity entities; $356,173 in
scholarships from military
enlistment, colleges, and
universities, for a total of
$436,859.
She noted that this year,
27-percent of the class is go-
ing on to four year colleges,
while 50-percent are going
to two year colleges, and
15-percent of the class have
enlisted in military service.
President of the CISD
School Board of Trustees,
John Erickson awarded the
diplomas to the students.
An emotional presenta-
tion of "The Middle" was
sung by Taylor Marr, as
the students prepared for
the ending of their years at
Clifton.
The benediction was giv-
en by Chelsea Eriekson, fol-
lowed by the Clifton High
