Do you realize - this Chamber of Commerce will have been here,
operating 10 years come August of 1999? But it was work of 17
concerned citizens that started the action into November of 1988?
It wasn't until April of 1990 an actual office space opened its door -
and a lot of coming and going has been through that door. I think of
it as a marriage. The first few honeymoon years have been here
and now its getting comfortable - oh, yes, there’s still the ups and
downs not to mention the "children" and the "everyday routine" - but
all in all it's still functioning.

New Officers Elected for Harper Chamber
The newly elected officers of the Harper Chamber of Commerce
will meet for the first time on February 12, 1999. The meeting will
be held at the Longhorn Cafe and will begin at 5:00 p.m. All
Chamber members and interested community members are invited
to attend and give suggestions and input.
Joy Kyriakopoulos, President, says that the focus of the monthly
meeting of the officers will be to brainstorm and develop plans of
action aimed at promoting Harper through community and civic
functions sponsored by the Chamber. One of the fist events this
slate of officers and Board members want to sponsor is a contest for
the best slogan for Harper. The slogan needs to be short, but
"catchy" and certainly memorable. This owuld be the type of thing
residents and visitros as well would see on bumper stickers, tee
shirts, and caps, etc. Some exiting examples are: Brady Texas'
"Heart of the Hill Country," and St. Louis Missouri's "Gateway to the
West." You may enter as many times as you like, but each entry
needs to be written on a 3"x5" index card with you name, address
and phone number on the back. Cards can be given to any officer
or Board member. Prizes will be announced at a future date.
At present the Chamber sponsors only the annual Trade Days
celebration in October. The current President and officers would
like to see an increase in community events such as a teen talent
contest, an annual community picnic, a "Littlest Cowboy and
Cowgirl" contest for small children, and some kind of community
event to celebrate the year 2,000. *The events will hopefully attract
business and visitors to Harper to discover its unique character,
local color, and its exceptionally friendly people. The officers and
Board members welcome any suggestions and/or ideas for future
events.
Currently the Chamber Board members are: Brad Whitten, Jay
Harper, Al Weinzierl, and Mitchell Harper. Officers are: President,
Joy Kyriakopoulos; Vice President, Helen DeLoof; Secretary, Susan
Welles; Treasurer, Jenness Rogers. Meetings will be held regularly
on the first Friday of each month with the location at a different
Harper establishment each time. For further information, joining the
Chamber, or paying dues, please contact one of the officers.
