Saturday in the Forest
Today was Saturday,
what did that mean? NO
SCHOOL! I thought about
staying in bed but c’mon! I
got up so slowly I think a
turtle could have beaten
me. Then I clamored
downstairs for breakfast.
Later I went outside to
play with my dog, Gee-Gee.
So now, I had nothing to do.
But then I got an awesome
idea, i would go look
around in my backyard. I
went inside to change then
because mom said I have to
wear proper clothing to go
into the forest.
We have a big back-
yard, so to go to the forest
there’s a trail leading to the
back. I loved this forest. It
always smelled good like
fresh pine. And all the birds
were singing their beautiful
songs. And it was always so
... well... forest-like!
For example if you follow
the trail, it becomes a Y.
There’s a log laying neatly
over one trail. On the
other trail, you have to go
through two trees. I decid-
ed to take the left trail.
After a while I got tired
and I think I fell asleep.
Suddenly, “Crunch! Crack!
Crickle!”
“What was th..that?” I
said as I stood up.
I kept saying, “I am not
going to turn around.’’ My
dog, Gee-Gee, growled
fiercely, then whimpered
and whined. I turned
around, looked up in hor-
ror, then almost
laughed myself silly.
It was my uncle Joe.
“Hey little lady, ya lost?”
asked Joe.
“Yes, I am! Can you
help?” I answered.
“Best I can do is give you
this.” He pulled a compass
from his pocket.
“Yes!” I said. “Home!”
Boy would Mom be mad! I
have been gone three
hours.

My Cat, S.C.
“S.C., S.C., come here
S.C.” I called out loud and
clear. All the sudden I
heard a soft crackle. So I
quickly got my flashlight
and turned it on. I shook
with fright. I heard it again
so I swerved to the left. I
couldn’t keep the flash light
steady. Then I swerved to
the right. Still no sign of
the cat. I called her name
again.
She just would not
come to me. She was lost
in the wilderness all alone.
“Poor, poor cat,” I thought.
“Crackle.” This time it
was lot closer. I could see
green eyes and a long gray
tail. My knees were like
rubber and my hands were
shaking.
I was terrified. My
heart beats were lower. I
got low to the ground and
peered over the grass. All
of a sudden, I heard a
meow. Then I slowly got up
not knowing what to do. In
a blink of an eye, S.C. start-
ed running after me so I
picked her up and hugged
her.
“Where were you?” I
asked her. But the question
was “Where was the
house?” The sun started to
set and I was getting a little
scared.
Then S.C. started to
squirm, so I got low and
started to look. Then it
flew over us.
So I told my cat, “It is
okay. It is only an owl.”
Then I looked for the
lights at the house and sure
enough, the lights were on.
So we started going to the
house. Once we got there I
fed S.C. dinner, and then I
went to bed.

Headwaters 4-H Members
Attend Leadership Conference
bv Kelly Bever
Several members of
Headwaters 4-H recently
attended the Junior
Leadership Retreat at the
State 4-H Center in
Brownwood, Texas.
While there, the mem-
bers learned about public
speaking, etiquette, team-
work, dancing, and leader-
ship. There were approxi-
mately 300 4-H members
from around the state in
attendance and many new
friends were made.
The adult leaders spon-
soring the trip were Kelly
Beyer, Bridgit Giedeman
and Greg Baethge.
Our youth represented
Harper and Gillespie County
in an outstanding manner.
We should be proud to know
that our future is in good
hands with such remarkable
young people in Harper.

Longhorn Angel Tree Project
As the holidays approach, it is that time of year again to help children and their
families in our school and community to have a happy holiday season. We will be
hosting the Longhorn Angel Tree project again this year. Longhorn Angels will
be hung from the Christmas tree in Bonnie Stewart’s office at the school.
Beginning Monday, November 10, stop by and select an angel from the tree.
Information such as wants, needs, and clothing sizes about a child will be printed
on each angel you select. Once you have selected an angel from the tree, please
purchase Christmas gifts for your little Longhorn Angel. Gifts need to be pur-
chased and returned to Bonnie on or before December 1 st. Gift wrapping will
be provided, so please return gifts unwrapped. Gift Suggestions: 2 clothing
items and 1 non-clothing item such as an age-appropriate “toy”, etc
Minimum Total Gift Value = $20
For those of you who cannot find time to shop for your “angel”, monetary
donations can be made, and we will do the shopping for you. Students are
encouraged to participate. However, students must have parental
permission to take an angel from the tree.
Your participation in this worthwhile project is greatly appreciated.
If you have any questions, please see Bonnie Stewart.
