Polled-Angus Cable.
In its uutive home the Polled-Aiunm
receives no tender treatment. The
young cuttle are rarely housed after
the first winter. They ore on their
pustules day and night,summer and
winter. In very cold weather they
were given hay and straw in the field
supporting themselves otherwise
on the "luggage" left unconsumed
after the summer grass. Some few
farmers’are improving, not overstock-
ing the pastures ns they used to lie,
and a portion of herbage is left for
the cattle in winter. But the most
fortunate of them got neither grain
or shelter. Being always accustom-
ed to such treatment, the char-
acteristics of tile breed have develop-
ed and becomes established accord-
ingly, and they are known as superior
rastura and vary hardy. These
characteristics will commend them
as strongly for the range as will their
fast growth, large size and superior
fattening qualities.
The Polled-Angus ure fust growers,
strong feeders and fatten readily.
They are altogether unfit for dairy
cattle, though the cows give all
abundance of milk to support the
calves. But their unfitness for
dairy purposes argues their
superior fitness for fine beef,
and for the range. The form of the
body bears equal strong testamony ;
and the composition of the body is
conclusive._

Last Monday wo attended the
public speaking at the Smith Springs
school house, between Dr. Mahoney,
ainti-prohibitiouist. and Judge
Boucher, prohibitionist. The Dr.
reviewed the history of political
parties down to the election of
Grover Cleveland, and classed pro-
hibition us a scheme gotten uj> by
republicans to split the solid south,
auc defeat the next democratic pres-
idential nominee. lie admitted the
evilH of whisky, hut ‘contended
that prohibition would not cure
them; that if passed it xyoiild be ty-
ing the hands of the people, who
would he compelled to pay their
physicians a foe every time they even
wanted u bottle of bitters, thus
working a hardship on the poor by
making them pay a doctors fee in
addition to the cost of the bitters or
whisky.
Judge Boucher, although the doc-
tor hud been euthusiusticully cheered,
got up smiling, and buckled down
right manfully to defend his side of
the uause. He made quotations
from learned authorities as to the
constitutionality of the law, and
painted word pictures of tile de-
struction wliinky had wrought iu
our laud, and urged all to vote for
prohibition. Our space will not
permit us to attempt to outline the
speeches of either gentleman.
Prof. T. B. King tells us that he
has been ft close observer since the.
prohibition canvass opened, and has
visited many neighborhoods, and’ is
of the opinion that prohibition will
carry by 5<H> majority.
Next Monday is election day.
We advise every one to go and vote,
and to vote as their consciences may
dictate. It is the duty of every
American citizen to cast his ballot
either for or against prohibition,
and we especially urge the farmers
to come out and vote either for or
against the hog law. If prohibi-
tion carries the law should be strict-
ly enforced. No one should throw
a single straw in the way of its en-
forcement. It will bo tho will of
tho majority, and their verdict must
be respected, and the laws resulting
therefrom strictly enforced! We
will give it a fair trial and then if
the people find that the law works
disastrously it will by them lie legal-
ly condemned in time at the ballot
box. No one can foretell the result
of the vote on prohibition. It may
and it may not carry.
Abe Metsgar must have an inter-
esting time buying toys if all the

Dr. Williamson says he only counted
12 girls at his house the other day
with several out in the yard who
scampered around so fast they
couldn’t be counted.

In all charity, I nip forced to tiro
conclusion that the friends and Ad-
vocates of this nefarious scheme,
are entire utikuigois to the principles
of the immortal 'Jefferson, Madison,
Monroe, Jackson and a host of other
illustrious statesmen, whose const
ant aim was to properly secure,
strengthen and wholesomly extend
the liberties of the people. Their
principles and actions were at war
with auy plan or unneeessary move
curtail or lessen them. I am a free
holder and heartily deprecate all
insidious attacks alike of fanatics
and evil doers on tho liberties of the
people. It is proposed to create
ami put in operation, this interesting
bog law by the free holders of the
county only. First let us examine
slightly its expediency. Individuals
collectively, as well as individually,
sometimes do wpong, courts fre-
niul despotism, ami forced to part
with their hogs nl a ruinous sacri-
fice, some of tlic very men perhaps,
who loudly clamor for such a law,
ami who are pecuniarily able to
raise hogs in pens, would be the
pin charset s, at their own merciful
figures, for most of us know .the dif-
ference in prevailing prices of prop-
erty forced on the market aud that
i free from the pressure of debt. How
other cnn you regard aud construe
this scheme tlmli it direct blow at
the suited liberties of the people
and calculated virtually to plunder
and rob them of their property and
deprive them of their legitimate
means for the support of their fami-
lies. Has the non free holder no
vested rights! Hus he not. the Same
common'right Hint the flee holders
to fife, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness! Allow fellow citizens
some at least of these non free hol-
ders credit for a spark of sense, iu
tclligeucc, courage and honor. We
are perfectly w illing for all who lire
able anil desire to pen and rear tlieir
hogs iu that manner, to do so. We
will kindly afford tliem all reasona-
ble aid ill our power to build their
pens, and then to collect anil enclose
tlieir hogs, and assist in guarding
them against the ininusion of rob-
bers, if there should he spell, but
the balance of the way we make no
pledges, for we feel entirely unable
to aid. either in watering nr feeding
them. Deprive us of our hogs, as
the establishment of siicii it law
would surely work out. and Olir corn
and grain would, rapidly become a
prey to low ami destructive prices;
such a law woiild also prove fruitful
of many more great evils, by destroy-
ing harmony, peace and friendship
prevailing in the county. We ap-
peal with a reasonable aud proper
sense of justice and right for a fair WM
and square ded. So voters of theftln,
