PSJA School records set at
McAllen Booster Relays
PSJA High School thinclads
faced the stiffest competition
they will face until state at the
McAllen Booster Club Relays
last weekend. The Bear's
standout performer Maggie
Salinas won the half-mile run
and Oscar Rivas won the 3200
meter race.
Both Rivas and Salinas were
cross-country standouts for the
fall PSJA cross-country teams.
Salinas, running amongst
taller and stronger girls, ran a
steady race and out distanced
her closest competitor with a
strong kick on the homestrech.
Salinas finished in 2:21.14,
three seconds faster than the
winning district time in 1979.
Three runners finished the
3200 in a pack, but PSJA’s
Rivas outlasted the pack. He
finished in 9:38.13.
The only other Bear from
the boy's team to earn points,
was Robert Martinez in the
discus. Martinez hurled the
ciscus 149 feet, good for a third
place medal.
Martinez also had an
excellant throw in the shot,
heaving it 50 feet. The winning
throw in the shot was 53-6, by
Arnold Kent of McAllen.
The PSJA girl's 800 meter
(880-yard) relay team finished
less than a second behind a
strong Houston Washington
team, crossing the line in
1:45.38. Porter finished third
with a time of 1:47.63.
The relay team consisted of
Betty Moncivias, Sandy
Ramirez, Lou Ann Garza and
Maggie Salinas. The 1:46.38
is a school record.
The 880-relay team is
composed of several soph-
omores, their coach Carlos
Vela said, and they should
improve on this time as they
work together more. He added
notwithstanding, it was a very
good time.
Cindy Munoz became the
first PSJA girl to throw the
discus over 100 feet. Her
104-foot toss was good for sixth
place. Vela said only two girls
in the district have registered
better throws that Munoz’
104-foot heave.
Other PSJA thinclads turn-
ed in outstanding times but
didn’t place due to the strong
field of entries.
Zulema Zapata set a school
record in the mile with a 5:47
time. Mary Donava rand a 5:59
mile, the third girl to break the
6-minute mile at PSJA High.
The girl’s mile-relay team
ran a strong 4:10.87. This pace
is only two seconds behind the
district-winning time of last
year.
Clara Ortiz, Maggie Salinas,
Sandy Ramirez and Betty
Moncivias ran on the mile
relay.
The 440-relay team of Betty
Moncivias, Lou Ann Garza,
Sandy Ramirez and Esmeralda
Barrera crossed the line with a
good time of 52.6.
Maribel Silva, a sophomore
who has been practicing only
two weeks because she was a
member of the basketball
team, made the finals in the
880-yard run. Her time of
2:33.7 was very good, Coach
Vela said, considering the
length of time she has been
training.
PSJA speedster Martin
McDonald failed to earn points.
Coach Joe Suarz said
McDonald was disqualified
from the 220 for false starts.
He said the 100-yard dash was
just a very strong field.
Coach Suarez said he
expected McDonald and the
rest of the team to improve on
their times as the seasons
matures.
The sprint relay team of Roy
Alanis, Ross Wood, Martin
McDonald and Fred Ramirez
ran a 44.79, the second fastest
time in the Valley to date, but
couldn’t earn points in the
strong field.
Wood ran a good 110-meter
hurdle race, finishing in 16 flat
but didn’t place. His time is the
second best in the Valley.
Fellow hurdler Ricky
Chavez ran a strong 330-yard
hurdle race, crossing the line
in 41.7 but didn’t place.
Oscar Rivas made the finals
in the mile. He ran a 4:27 mile.
