The survival of the
macaw, the brightly
colored parrots of the
tropics, are reported to
be in danger by the
National Wildlife
Federation.
Macaws bring as high
as $30,000, the NWF
said, and forture-hun-
ters and loss of habitat
have the macaw in
trouble.
The macaw is found
from Mexico to Argen-
tina.
Those beetles you
swept out of the house or
off the porch early this
month may soon come
back to haunt you, the
Weslaco Extension Ser-
vice reports. They will
soon emerge in the form
of white grubs.
Lawns under grub at-
tack will often show
brown patches in early
to mid-summer. To check
for grubs, cut out a one-
square foot section of
turf with a shovel and
turn it over. If more than
four grubs show, treat-
ment is needed.
The first 11 days of July
is said to be a good time
for treatment. Diazinon,
Dursban or Dylox can be
used.
From the PEST CAST:
Cotton: Most fields
made good progress.
Some fields had boll
counts of 20 bolls per
foot of row. Others were
blooming very well.
Boll weevils also in-
creased.
Corn: Corn earworms
and fall armyworms are
still active in the Valley.
Sorghum midge
populations are also
high and late blooming
heads may sustain
heavy damage.
