vj-ccRten1 Club for ~ the
contribution of some plants.
They’re refreshing.
There still are many ways
to help establish this
community solution t a
community problem. One
room is finished, another
room has been spoken for and
there are 15 rooms yet to go.
So we are still in need of
much involvement. Any
thing that even one person
does, really makes a
difference that can be seen
instantly!
There’s quite an
opportunity for education in
the practical sense at Step
House. We were offered 36
chickens so the offer was
gratefully accepted!
However, this was nof quite
as simple as going to the store
to get them. Rather, we went
to the farm to get them where
we spent the morning learning
how to catch, kill, skin, and
gut them! What an
experience and fun was
eventually had by all! Thank
you Stewart Family of
Mercedes for 33 chickens in
the freezer (we couldn’t catch
3 of them!)
Here is some information
for the families and friends of
alcoholics and addicts: What
do you do about the habits?
1. You can help yourself by
learning the intelligent way to
live with this problem.
2. Don’t resign yourself to it;
everyone has a right to a
decent life and human
dignity.
3. Do accept the fact that you
have a problem and that you
yourself can learn to solve it.
4. Learn first that most of the
things we say and do - in
anger, frustration or despair -
ony make matters worse for
us.
Once a newspaper
described Step House as
having “a colorful past with a
bright new future”. At that
time—1- years ago neither
of the two characteristics were
very obvious. But, my what
a difference a day makes

gallons of paint, a super-

Gary Marshall for putting in
some of the plumbing. We
still need help in this area if

In fact, there are still plenty
of ways that groups and or
individuals can help.

“Miracles are made to
happen.” Mrs. Harold Dooley
stated. “I am one!”
Mrs. Dooley experienced a
stroke in June 1979. “My
entire left side was paralyzed
from my head to my little toe.
Even my speech was
affected.” she grinned.
“I was taken to the
Edinburg Hospital Emergency
Room. Receiving immediate
attention. I had further
diagnositic service and started
therapy at the McAllen
Hospital. These events were
critical. I was at home for
five weeks continuing a home
therapy program.”
Talented Sarah Dooley is a
Texan and Valleyite. Sarah’s
husband, the late Harold
Dooley, was a long time
Valley Educator. It was
natural for Mrs. Dooley
to enter the teaching
profession after her husbands
death in 1974.
Sarah Dooley attended East
TexasState University. Later
she took her degree in
Elementary Education at Pan
American University
graduating Summa Cum
Laude in 1977. She is
bilingual and holds teaching
certificates in both Early
Childhood Teaching and in
Art.
Mrs. Dooley is presently
employed by the Pharr-San
Jua-Alamo School District.
She teacher four year old
children of migrant parents.
Mrs. Dooley is the mother
of two sons and a daughter.
“My children have been a
part of the team in my
recovery.” she said. ‘I have
come a long way. My
children never wavered in
their faith that I would
recover.
“Observing others who
have experienced disabling
illness or accident, I marvel at
the strenght of the human
spirit,” she said. “My
recovery from the stroke is
truly amazing. I have the
help of highly trained and
skilled occupational and
physical therapists.” I went
from immobility to the use of
a cane, and then to driving
my car without special
equipment in six months.”
Mrs. Dooley began
rehabilitation therapy at the
Easter Seal Center in July
1979 under the direction of
Sister LaDonna, Occupational
Therapist and Bonnie Jo
Whittinghton, Physical
Therapist.
“Our goal for Sarah is for
improved strength,
coordination and improved
control of the upper
extremities. Sarah has
already mastered the skills of
daily living and
homemaking,” Sister
LaDonna said.
“Her treatment is designed
to help her reach the desired
goals in the least possible
item.” said Ms. Whittington.
Mrs. Dooley visits the
Easter Seal Center twice
weekly for therapy. “The
program is especially
outstanding,” she said. The
staff has a practical approach
to rehabilitation that is
scientific, supportive and
encouraging.”
Mrs. Dooley returned to
classroom teaching for the
1979-80 school term.
“I could not have made
such positive gains from the
stroke without believing there
is a well of faith and strength
within the human spirit that
can be tapped in time of
adversity that will
successfully bring one through
life’s crushing experiences wit
dignity and
determination.’’she said.
“My recovery is a
miracle!”
