Half-Century Marriages Honored
At Winter Senior Citizens Club
On Wednesday, Feb. 14th the
members of the Pharr Winter
Senior Citizens Club who had
been married 50 years or more
were honored at the regular
dinner meeting of the club held
at the Pharr Civic Center.
There were 116 in attendance.
The couples were seated at a
long table beautifully decorated
with a gold runner and red
roses in bud vases down the
middle of the table completed
the arrangement.
Following the dinner, Mr.
Leonard Waxon, vice president
presided. He introduced those
on the program, which
consisted of a group of poems
read by Mrs. Harley Austin and
several song selections sung by
Mr. Jerry Lane of McAllen. He
was accompanied on the piano
by Mrs. Jan Russell.
Mrs. Harter, on behalf of the
honored couples, thanked the
club for the special tribute.
Mrs. Waxon gave special
thanks to Mrs. Harley Austin
for preparing the meat and to
all of those on the committee
helped.
The after-dinner hours were
spent playing cards, dominoes,
and shuffling.
Library Offers
Home Films
For Public
Pharr Memorial Library has
added about 40 video cassette
films onto its audio-visual
collections for public loans, and
the films will be shown to
individuals in the Conference
Room upon patrons’ request.
Among the video cassettes
currently available at the Pharr
Library there are films entitled
“The Bolero,” “Rootball Fol-
lies,” “The Horrible Honchos,”
and “The Bridge of Adam
Rush.”
Many other video cassette
film titles for loans are listed in
a recently compiled catalog,
which can be examined at the
Pharr Library by patrons
wanting to borrow for home use
from the Texas State Library;
patrons borrowing video cas-
sette films from the catalog will
have to pay the postage for
returning them to Austin.
Patrons checking out video
cassettes must be at least 18
years old and have a library
card; they can check out no
more than 3 cassettes each
time, and an overdue fine of
$1.00 per day for each cassette
will be charged.

Carrasco
ILLESHEIM, Germany
(AHTNC)-Private Ignacio
Carrasco Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ignacio G. Carrasco, 522
West Huisache, San Juan,
recently was assigned as a tank
crewman with the 13th Armor
in Illesheim, Germany.
He entered the Army in
September 1978.
Carrasco completed high
school through the General
Educational Development pro-
gram.
Cardenas
Marine Lance Corporal Felix
Cardenas, son of Jose M. and
Elvira R. Cardenas of 102 East
St. John Drive, Pharr, recently
participated in “Jack Frost-79"
at Fort Waynewright, Alaska.
He is a member of the 3rd
Battalion, 7th Marines based at
Marine Corps Base, Camp
Pendleton, California.
“Jack Frost-79” was designed
to develop and evaluate
procedures for assaults in
sub-arctic climates. Stressing
the problems encountered in
cold weather operations, the
30-day exercise involved both
individual and unit training.
Instruction included cross-
country skiing, snowshoeing,
shelter construction and indi-
vidual survial methods.
Cardenas joined the Marine
Corps in September 1975.

at Fort Benning, Georgia.

David Liu has been requested
by the SINOLOGISCH INSTI-
TUUT to send each of his
published articles to Holland
“for permanent preservation."
In a formal letter to David
Liu dated February 5, 1979,
SINOLOGISCH INSTITUUT
stated: “As a leading institute
of Chinese studies Sinologisch
Instituut attempts to preserve
writings of Chinese scholars
abroad.
“These publications will
interest many users of the
library of our institute. We
would deeply appreciate it if
you would kindly send us a copy
of each of your articles for
permenent preservation.”
The Sinologisch Instituut is DAVID LIU...his works will be permanently preserved
in Leiden, the Netherlands.

HAROLD [ROCKY] MARTIN
Harold Dwight (Rocky)
Martin, 317 East Gore, Pharr,
died Monday, February 19,
1979, at the McAllen General
Hospital after a long illness. He
was 74.
Mr. Martin came to the
Valley in 1944 from Minnea-
polis, Minnesota, and operated
the City Drug Fountain in
McAllen from 1944 to 1946. He
came to Pharr in 1946 and
worked for Johnson LPG Co.
until 1960, when he went into
the cafe business (Martin’s
Cafe), on S. Cage, as owner and
operator. He continued with
the cafe business until 1973
when he retired.
He was a life-time member of
the Elks Lodge in McAllen and
a member of the Fraternal
Order of Eagles of Pharr.
He is survived by his wife,
Ida Martin, two sisters, Mrs.
Blanch Hoivick, Minneapolis,
Minnesota; Mrs. Margie Swan-
son, Fort Myers, Illinois; and
one brother, Robert Martin,
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Funeral Home Chapel, with
Rev. J.E.(Sonny) York, pastor
of the First Baptist Church,
Pharr, officiating, with inter-
ments in the Palm Valley
Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Clayton
Vanderslice, Neal Murray,
Harris Cosby, Joe Harris,
James Bailey, and R. L. Nance.
Service are under the
MARY E. SCHLISKA
PHARR-Funeral services
for Mrs. Mary E. Schliska, 87,
were held Monday at the
Skinner Funeral Home, with
the Rev. Thom Elliott of the
First United Methodist Church
officiating.
Mrs. Schliska died Saturday
at McAllen General Hospital.
She was a Valley pioneer,
having come to Pharr in 1913
from Illinois. She was a
bookkeeper with Pharr Equity
Exchange for 32 years.
Survivors include two broth-
ers, Charles and Ed Danner of
Pharr; one grandson, Phillip
Schliska of Corpus Christi; two
granddaughters, Mrs. Gregg
(Vickie) Orell of Corpus Christi
and Mrs. M. (Linda) Brown of
Bay City; and three great-
grandchildren.
Burial was in Roselawn
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were H.B.
Speers, Alonzo Benavides,
Charles Curtis, Bill Sherman,
Bob Cartwright and Shelbv
Crosby.
