White has one of these machines
now on exhibition at the White

that the Oklahoma field was
sprayed three times. He has no
interest in the machines, and hap-
pened to be in Stephenville Sat-
urday afternoon, and friends,
knowing he had knowledge of the
use of calcium arsenic in Okla-
homa, asked him to attend a boll
weevil meeting which was then in
progress in Stephenville, and he
willingly did so, and took an ac;
live interet. The cost for three
sprayings, he said, not counting
the cost of labor, was about $4
per acre. Frank White and John
Frey figure that four sprayings,
which are the number required,
can be made at a cost of about
$3.50 per acre. The spraying is
done at night as ’the poison ad-

machines, and regard them as the
scurge of the boll weevil family.1
Up to 1921 the boll weevil con-
sidered himself proof against any
of the machinations of man to
get rid of him until this particu-,
lar machine was invented and
then the machine was the laugh-1
ing stock of the whole boll weevil
tribe until some chemist discover- f
ed a process of making calcium:
arertic, and it was then that great,
alarm took possession of Mr. Boll
Weevil, and he feared his whole {
-tribe would be eliminated from!
hte face of the earth.
The cost of applying this poison j
is the only thing in the way, and
this would not be felt had the j
weevils not done such great dam-1
age in 1921, but there is one good |
way around it, and that is toj
plant less cotton, give it better,
cultural methods, and spray. Ifj
20 acres can be made to yield
three-quarters of a bale of cotton
by spraying at a cost of $70, the
20 acres will yield more cotton [
than 100 acres of unsprayed cot-
ton, and the 80 acres can be de-
voted to other crops. The small
.farmer can come down to five and
six acre cotton crops, and be rea-
sonably sure of a good crop, pro-
vided he sprays.
The field of 150 aefes of cot-
ton referred to by Mr. Newton, if
left unsprayed, would have made
only 15 bales. The 80 acres
sprayed made 60 bales. If this
can be done in Erath county no
one need fear Mr. Boll Weevil.

were not wealthy, and some had

Carlton, Texas. March 29, 1922.
—Last Saturday morning a num-
ber of the Carlton people turned
out in their cars and met the
early morning train to ecort your
noble band from the depot to our
town.
We had invited the band
through Dean Davis to come down
and make music for the occasion.
The boys came in high spirits and
declared that they enjoyed them-
elves immensely. There was never
a nobler set of boys that came to
Carlton. They conducted them-
selves as gentlemen, no bad lang-
uage was used by them and it is
our regret that they could not re-
main longer.
Although it rained during the
morning, a large crowd turned out
in the afternoon, and as usual we
had a glorious good time.
